Relationship Between Ramp Design and Accessibility in Public Buildings
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between ramp design and accessibility in public buildings. Ramps are important architectural elements that provide alternative routes for people with mobility limitations, including wheelchair users, older adults, and individuals with temporary or permanent physical impairments. The effectiveness of a ramp in providing accessible movement depends on design characteristics such as slope, width, length, landing provision, handrails, surface condition, edge protection, and connection with other circulation spaces. The study will assess selected ramp design features and determine their relationship with accessibility in public buildings. Attention will be given to ramp gradient, width, surface materials, handrail provision, landing areas, entrance connections, directional arrangement, and ease of movement. Accessibility will be evaluated based on ease of approach, movement, turning, use, safety, and the ability of users with different mobility needs to access major areas of the selected buildings. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected public buildings with ramp facilities will be identified using an appropriate sampling technique and assessed through physical observation, dimensional measurements, accessibility checklists, and user responses where applicable. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation tests will be applied to determine the relationship between ramp design characteristics and accessibility. The study is expected to reveal variations in accessibility among public buildings with different ramp designs. Ramps with appropriate gradients, adequate widths, sufficient landing spaces, suitable handrails, safe surfaces, and convenient connections to building entrances are expected to provide better accessibility and ease of movement. Conversely, steep slopes, inadequate widths, insufficient landings, slippery surfaces, or poorly positioned ramps may create difficulties for users and reduce the effectiveness of the buildings’ accessible circulation systems. The findings will be useful to architects, building designers, facility managers, accessibility consultants, urban planners, building regulators, and other professionals involved in public building development. The study may provide useful information for improving ramp design and promoting inclusive access to public facilities. It may also contribute to the development of safer and more convenient circulation systems that support independent movement and participation of people with different mobility needs. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between ramp design and accessibility in public buildings. It is recommended that ramp dimensions, gradient, handrails, landing areas, surface conditions, and connections with building entrances should be carefully considered during the design and assessment of public buildings. Further studies involving different categories of public buildings and a wider range of users are recommended to provide broader information on accessible circulation and inclusive building design.
