Relationship Between Universal Design and User Independence in Public Facilities
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between universal design and user independence in public facilities, with emphasis on how inclusive architectural features influence the ability of users to access, navigate, and use public buildings with minimal assistance. Universal design promotes environments that can be used by people with diverse physical, sensory, and functional abilities. Its application in public facilities is therefore important for creating accessible environments that support convenience, safety, dignity, and independent participation. The study will assess the extent to which universal design principles are incorporated into selected public facilities and examine their relationship with user independence. Attention will be given to accessible entrances, ramps, circulation routes, door widths, stairways, lifts, accessible toilets, handrails, signage, tactile features, seating, and other relevant building elements. User independence will be assessed based on ease of entry, movement within the facility, access to services, ability to locate spaces, safety, convenience, and the extent to which users can perform activities without assistance. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of selected public facilities and their users will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through physical observations, accessibility checklists, dimensional measurements, photographic documentation, and structured questionnaires administered to selected users and relevant facility personnel. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation or inferential techniques will be applied to determine the relationship between universal design features and user independence. The study is expected to reveal that public facilities with more comprehensive universal design features provide better opportunities for independent use by people with different abilities. Accessible circulation routes, appropriately designed entrances, suitable toilet facilities, clear signage, adequate door widths, and properly positioned support features may improve users’ ability to navigate and use facilities without assistance. However, the level of independence may vary according to the quality, continuity, maintenance, and usability of accessibility features, as well as individual user requirements and the functional characteristics of each facility. The findings will be useful to architects, urban planners, facility managers, developers, planning authorities, and other professionals involved in the design and management of public facilities. The study may provide useful information for improving inclusive architectural practices and ensuring that accessibility provisions support actual user independence rather than merely satisfying minimum design requirements. It may also contribute to the development of public environments that promote equal participation, safety, dignity, convenience, and improved user experience. The study will conclude by establishing the relationship between universal design and user independence in public facilities and highlighting the importance of inclusive design in creating accessible built environments. It is recommended that universal design principles be incorporated comprehensively into public building planning, with attention to accessibility, continuity of movement, clear wayfinding, appropriate facility dimensions, and regular maintenance. Further studies should examine universal design and user independence across different categories of public facilities and diverse user groups to support more inclusive architectural design practices.
