The Effect of Corridor Width on Building Circulation Efficiency

Abstract

Corridors are fundamental circulation elements in buildings because they provide connections between rooms, functional areas, entrances, and vertical circulation systems. Their dimensions can significantly influence how efficiently occupants move through a building, particularly in facilities with high levels of pedestrian activity. Inadequate corridor widths may create congestion, restrict movement, and reduce accessibility, while excessively wide corridors may occupy valuable floor area without necessarily improving circulation performance. This study examines the effect of corridor width on building circulation efficiency, focusing on the relationship between corridor dimensions and patterns of occupant movement. It considers factors such as corridor width, pedestrian volume, direction of movement, occupancy levels, intersections, door locations, and connections to major circulation spaces. The study seeks to determine how variations in corridor width influence movement speed, congestion, accessibility, and the overall efficiency of building circulation. The research also considers the interaction between corridor width and building function. Different building types, including schools, hospitals, offices, residential buildings, commercial facilities, and public buildings, generate different circulation demands. Facilities with high pedestrian traffic may require wider circulation routes to accommodate simultaneous movement, waiting, interaction, and emergency access. The study therefore examines how corridor dimensions should respond to anticipated patterns of use. Doorways, intersections, furniture, equipment, and other obstructions are also considered because they can reduce the effective width available for movement. Poorly positioned doors may interrupt circulation, while furniture, display elements, or equipment placed within corridors can create bottlenecks. Clear circulation zones, appropriate spatial planning, and effective separation of movement paths can therefore improve the functional performance of corridors. The study further considers accessibility and safety as important dimensions of circulation efficiency. Corridors should accommodate different users, including persons using wheelchairs, elderly occupants, children, and people carrying goods or equipment. Adequate width, appropriate turning spaces, unobstructed routes, sufficient lighting, and clear wayfinding can support more inclusive movement. Corridor design should also consider emergency evacuation requirements and the movement of large numbers of occupants during critical situations. The study aims to provide a clearer understanding of the relationship between corridor width and building circulation efficiency. Its findings are expected to assist architects, planners, and building designers in determining appropriate corridor dimensions based on building function, occupancy, accessibility requirements, and movement patterns. By integrating corridor width with effective spatial planning and inclusive design principles, buildings can achieve more efficient, comfortable, accessible, and safe circulation environments.
