The Effect of Courtyard Design on Natural Ventilation in Residential Buildings
Abstract
Courtyards are important architectural elements that can influence the environmental performance of residential buildings by creating opportunities for natural ventilation, daylighting, and improved outdoor-indoor interaction. Their configuration, orientation, proportions, and connection to surrounding rooms can significantly affect air movement within residential spaces. Inadequately designed courtyards, however, may restrict airflow or contribute to excessive heat accumulation. This study examines the effect of courtyard design on natural ventilation in residential buildings and evaluates how courtyard characteristics influence indoor thermal conditions and occupant comfort. The study focuses on key courtyard design parameters, including courtyard size, aspect ratio, orientation, enclosure height, opening configuration, and relationship with adjacent rooms. The position and size of windows, doors, and other openings connected to the courtyard are also considered because they determine the extent to which air can enter and circulate through residential spaces. These characteristics are assessed to establish their influence on airflow patterns and ventilation effectiveness. The interaction between courtyard geometry and prevailing wind conditions is an important consideration in achieving effective natural ventilation. Courtyards can channel, redirect, or moderate wind movement depending on their orientation and surrounding building form. The study therefore examines how courtyard configuration responds to prevailing wind direction and how differences in pressure around openings can facilitate cross-ventilation. Attention is also given to the role of building orientation and surrounding obstructions in determining ventilation performance. Thermal conditions within courtyards can also influence the effectiveness of natural ventilation. Solar exposure, surface materials, vegetation, shading, and the amount of exposed courtyard area can affect air temperature and the movement of warm air. Vegetation and shaded areas may help reduce heat accumulation and create more favourable microclimatic conditions. The study considers these factors in relation to the ability of courtyard spaces to support comfortable indoor environments. The effectiveness of courtyard ventilation is further influenced by the spatial organization of residential buildings. The arrangement of bedrooms, living spaces, kitchens, circulation areas, and service spaces around the courtyard can determine the distribution of fresh air throughout the building. Poorly positioned openings or enclosed internal zones may limit ventilation even where the courtyard itself is well designed. The study therefore considers the relationship between courtyard design, internal layout, and occupant use patterns. The study aims to provide a better understanding of how courtyard design can be optimized to enhance natural ventilation in residential buildings. It is expected to identify courtyard configurations and supporting design strategies that promote effective airflow, reduce dependence on mechanical cooling, and improve indoor thermal comfort. The findings will be useful to architects, residential developers, and building designers in developing climate-responsive housing solutions that improve environmental performance, occupant wellbeing, and energy efficiency.
