The Effect of Interior Layout on Co-Working Space User Satisfaction

Abstract

Co-working spaces have become increasingly important as flexible work environments that accommodate freelancers, entrepreneurs, start-ups, remote workers, and other professional groups. The interior layout of these spaces can significantly influence how users interact with their surroundings, perform tasks, communicate with others, and perceive their overall work environment. Effective spatial organization is therefore essential for creating co-working environments that balance collaboration, concentration, privacy, flexibility, and comfort. This study examines the effect of interior layout on user satisfaction in co-working spaces, focusing on how spatial arrangement influences users' experiences and perceptions. Key layout characteristics considered include workstation configuration, circulation, zoning, meeting spaces, communal areas, private work areas, relaxation spaces, furniture arrangement, and spatial flexibility. The study also considers how these features respond to the different activities and working patterns of co-working space users. The study further investigates the relationship between spatial configuration and user satisfaction. Open work areas can encourage communication, networking, and collaboration, while enclosed or semi-private areas can support concentration and individual work. Appropriate separation between active and quiet zones can reduce distractions and improve functional efficiency. The positioning of shared facilities such as meeting rooms, lounges, kitchens, and printing areas is also important in determining ease of access and patterns of interaction within the workspace. Environmental and ergonomic qualities are additional factors that influence satisfaction with co-working interiors. Adequate natural lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, acoustic control, ergonomic furniture, visual privacy, and appropriate workstation spacing can improve users' physical and psychological comfort. The integration of these environmental considerations with effective spatial planning can contribute to a more productive and pleasant work experience. However, poorly planned interior layouts may result in overcrowding, excessive noise, limited privacy, circulation conflicts, inadequate access to shared facilities, and difficulties in adapting spaces to different work activities. Co-working spaces must accommodate users with diverse preferences and schedules, making flexibility particularly important. The ability to modify furniture arrangements, create different levels of privacy, and accommodate changing group sizes can enhance the long-term functionality of co-working environments. The study aims to assess the effect of interior layout on co-working space user satisfaction and identify the spatial and environmental characteristics that contribute most strongly to positive user experiences. The findings are expected to assist architects, interior designers, developers, and facility managers in creating co-working environments that support productivity, collaboration, privacy, flexibility, and comfort. Ultimately, the study seeks to contribute to the development of user-centred co-working spaces that respond effectively to the changing needs of contemporary workers.
