The Effect of Office Colour Schemes on Employee Perception

Abstract

Colour is an important visual component of office design that can influence how employees perceive and experience their working environment. The selection and combination of colours on walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, finishes, and interior elements can contribute to the overall character and atmosphere of an office. Because employees spend substantial amounts of time within workplace environments, the visual qualities of these spaces may affect perceptions of comfort, professionalism, stimulation, and workplace satisfaction. Understanding the relationship between office colour schemes and employee perception is therefore relevant to contemporary workplace design. This study examines the effect of office colour schemes on employee perception, focusing on how different colour combinations influence employees’ responses to their work environment. It considers characteristics such as hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, and colour balance within office interiors. The study also investigates employees’ perceptions of different colour schemes in relation to comfort, attractiveness, professionalism, spaciousness, privacy, and overall workplace quality. The influence of colour may vary depending on the function and characteristics of individual office spaces. Colours used in reception areas may communicate organizational identity and create particular first impressions, while workspaces may require colour schemes that support concentration and visual comfort. Meeting rooms, collaborative areas, relaxation spaces, and circulation zones may similarly benefit from different approaches to colour selection. The study therefore considers how colour schemes can be coordinated with the functional requirements of different workplace spaces. The study further examines the relationship between colour and other interior design elements. Lighting conditions, material finishes, furniture, textures, spatial dimensions, and natural daylight can alter the appearance and perceived effect of colours within an office. A colour that appears comfortable under one lighting condition may produce a different visual response under another. Consequently, effective colour planning requires consideration of the interaction between colour, lighting, materials, and spatial characteristics. Employee perception of office colour may also vary according to individual preferences, cultural background, age, occupation, and the type of work being performed. While some colour schemes may be perceived as stimulating and energetic, others may be associated with calmness, formality, or relaxation. Excessive contrast, highly saturated colours, or poorly coordinated combinations may create visual discomfort for some users. Understanding these differences can help designers develop office interiors that provide a balanced and inclusive visual environment. The study aims to assess the effect of office colour schemes on employee perception and identify colour-planning strategies that can support positive workplace experiences. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, interior designers, facility managers, and organizations in selecting colours that respond to both functional and psychological aspects of office design. By integrating colour with lighting, materials, spatial planning, and organizational identity, office environments can be designed to support comfort, satisfaction, and positive employee perceptions.
