The Effect of Privacy Design on User Satisfaction in Women Support Facilities
Abstract
Women support facilities provide essential services such as counselling, healthcare assistance, skills development, temporary support, legal guidance, and social services for women with diverse needs and circumstances. The level of privacy provided within these environments can significantly influence users' sense of safety, dignity, comfort, and willingness to engage with available services. Inadequate privacy may result in discomfort, reduced trust, and reluctance to use sensitive facilities. This study therefore examines the effect of privacy design on user satisfaction in women support facilities. The study focuses on architectural features that influence visual, acoustic, and spatial privacy within women support environments. Counselling rooms, consultation areas, waiting spaces, sleeping or temporary accommodation areas, sanitary facilities, offices, reception areas, and communal spaces are examined in relation to their privacy requirements. The study considers how spatial organization and relationships between these areas affect the ability of users to control personal interactions and exposure. Particular attention is given to spatial zoning and circulation patterns. The separation of public, semi-private, and private areas can help protect users from unnecessary observation and unwanted encounters while maintaining convenient access to essential services. Entrance locations, waiting areas, corridors, door positions, room orientations, and transitional spaces are therefore examined in relation to privacy and user movement. Appropriate zoning can also support staff supervision without compromising the personal dignity of users. The study further considers visual and acoustic privacy as important components of user satisfaction. Appropriate wall construction, door placement, screening, window positioning, partitions, landscaping, and controlled sightlines can reduce unwanted visual exposure. Similarly, adequate acoustic separation between counselling rooms, consultation spaces, offices, and waiting areas can help prevent conversations from being overheard. These design considerations are particularly important where facilities provide confidential or sensitive support services. The research also examines the relationship between privacy, security, accessibility, and environmental comfort. Privacy should not result in spaces that are isolated, difficult to access, poorly supervised, or unsafe. Adequate lighting, clear circulation, controlled access, comfortable waiting areas, accessible facilities, and appropriate visibility of key routes can contribute to a balanced environment. The study therefore considers how privacy can be integrated with safety and social interaction rather than treated as an isolated architectural requirement. The study aims to assess the influence of privacy-oriented architectural design on user satisfaction in women support facilities and identify spatial factors that contribute to dignity, comfort, trust, and perceived safety. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, social service organizations, and facility managers involved in the design and improvement of women-focused support environments. By integrating privacy, security, accessibility, environmental comfort, and user-centred spatial planning, such facilities can provide more supportive and satisfactory environments for women seeking assistance and services.
