The Effect of Reception Design on Patient Orientation
Abstract
Reception areas serve as important points of arrival and orientation in healthcare facilities, providing patients and visitors with their first physical and visual connection to the building. The design of the reception can influence how easily users understand the organization of the facility, identify destinations, and begin their journey through unfamiliar spaces. Poorly designed reception areas may create confusion, anxiety, congestion, and delays, particularly for first-time visitors. Effective reception design is therefore an important component of patient-centred healthcare architecture. This study examines the effect of reception design on patient orientation within healthcare facilities. It focuses on spatial configuration, visibility of reception desks, entrance positioning, signage, circulation routes, waiting areas, lighting, colour, and visual cues. The study considers how these design elements influence patients' ability to identify the reception point, understand available routes, and locate key departments and services. It also examines how reception design can support intuitive wayfinding for patients, visitors, caregivers, elderly users, and people with different physical abilities. The visibility and positioning of the reception desk are particularly important in establishing a clear orientation point. A reception area that is easily identifiable from the main entrance can reduce uncertainty and provide users with an immediate reference point. Clear circulation routes extending from the reception area can further support movement toward consultation rooms, waiting areas, laboratories, pharmacies, and other departments. Conversely, visual obstructions, complex layouts, unclear entrances, and poorly organized circulation networks can make navigation more difficult. Environmental and visual design features can also influence patient orientation and comfort. Appropriate lighting, colour differentiation, architectural landmarks, signage, floor patterns, and views toward important destinations can help users recognize different zones and routes. The use of consistent visual language throughout the facility can reinforce spatial understanding, while excessive visual complexity may increase confusion. Reception areas should therefore balance information, visual clarity, comfort, and functional requirements. The study further considers the relationship between reception design, patient stress, accessibility, and healthcare experience. Patients may enter healthcare facilities while experiencing anxiety, illness, unfamiliarity, or physical limitations, making simple and understandable environments particularly important. Accessible reception counters, adequate circulation space, clear signage, appropriate seating, and staff visibility can support different user needs. Effective communication between reception personnel and patients can further complement the physical design and improve the orientation process. The study aims to assess how reception design influences patient orientation and identify architectural strategies that can improve wayfinding and user experience in healthcare facilities. It is expected to contribute to improved understanding of how spatial organization, visibility, signage, lighting, colour, circulation, and accessibility can work together to create clear and supportive reception environments. The findings can provide useful guidance for architects, healthcare planners, facility managers, and designers seeking to develop healthcare facilities that are easier to navigate, less stressful, and more responsive to patient needs.
