The Effect of Roof Insulation on Indoor Thermal Conditions
Abstract
Roof insulation is an important component of building design because roofs are directly exposed to solar radiation and can contribute significantly to heat transfer between the outdoor and indoor environments. In warm and tropical climates, inadequate roof insulation can result in excessive heat gain during the day and increased indoor temperatures, which may reduce thermal comfort and increase dependence on mechanical cooling systems. Improving roof insulation can therefore provide an effective approach to regulating indoor thermal conditions and enhancing building energy performance. This study examines the effect of roof insulation on indoor thermal conditions in buildings. It focuses on how different insulation characteristics influence indoor air temperature, surface temperature, thermal comfort, and heat transfer through the roof. The study considers factors such as insulation thickness, thermal conductivity, roof construction, ceiling configuration, and material properties to understand their relationship with indoor environmental performance. The effectiveness of roof insulation is also influenced by climatic conditions and building characteristics. Solar radiation, outdoor air temperature, roof orientation, roof colour, ventilation, ceiling height, and building occupancy can affect the extent to which insulation contributes to indoor thermal regulation. The interaction between insulation and other passive design strategies, such as natural ventilation and reflective roofing materials, is therefore considered important in achieving improved thermal performance. The study further considers the potential influence of roof insulation on occupants' thermal comfort and building energy consumption. By reducing the transfer of external heat into interior spaces, appropriate insulation may help maintain more stable indoor temperatures and reduce the frequency or duration of mechanical cooling. However, the performance of insulation can vary depending on installation quality, material selection, moisture conditions, and the overall design of the building envelope. Despite its potential benefits, the adoption of roof insulation may be affected by material availability, construction practices, cost considerations, maintenance requirements, and limited awareness of its long-term benefits. In developing and tropical contexts, there is a need to identify insulation solutions that are technically effective, economically feasible, and compatible with local construction methods. Proper integration of insulation into roof assemblies is also essential to avoid thermal bridges and other performance limitations. The study aims to assess the relationship between roof insulation and indoor thermal conditions and to identify roof insulation characteristics that can contribute to improved thermal comfort. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, building designers, developers, and facility managers in selecting appropriate roof insulation strategies. The study can also contribute to the development of more energy-efficient and thermally comfortable buildings through improved roof design and passive environmental control.
