The Effect of Shopping Mall Design on Consumer Behaviour
Abstract
Shopping mall design plays an important role in shaping how consumers perceive, navigate, and interact with commercial environments. Beyond providing spaces for retail activities, contemporary shopping malls incorporate circulation routes, atriums, entertainment areas, food courts, public spaces, and visual displays that influence the overall shopping experience. The arrangement and quality of these spaces can affect consumers’ movement patterns, length of stay, comfort, and interaction with retail outlets. Understanding the relationship between architectural design and consumer behaviour is therefore important for the planning and development of effective commercial environments. This study examines the effect of shopping mall design on consumer behaviour, focusing on how spatial organization and architectural characteristics influence consumers’ experiences and responses. It considers factors such as mall layout, circulation patterns, shop visibility, entrance design, spatial hierarchy, wayfinding, seating areas, and the positioning of anchor stores. The study also explores how these design characteristics may influence consumer movement, exploration of retail spaces, time spent within the mall, and willingness to revisit. The study further examines the influence of environmental qualities on consumer behaviour. Lighting, colour, materials, acoustics, ventilation, thermal comfort, landscaping, and visual aesthetics can contribute to the atmosphere and perceived quality of shopping environments. Appropriate integration of these elements can create comfortable and visually engaging spaces, while poorly designed environments may cause discomfort, confusion, or premature departure. The relationship between environmental quality and consumer perception is therefore an important aspect of shopping mall design. Spatial configuration and wayfinding are also considered significant factors. Complex circulation patterns, unclear entrances, poorly positioned signage, and inadequate visual connections can make it difficult for consumers to locate shops and facilities. Conversely, clear circulation routes, identifiable landmarks, attractive focal points, and effective signage can improve orientation and encourage exploration. The study therefore considers how spatial legibility and connectivity influence consumer movement and interaction with different areas of the shopping mall. The study also considers the role of social and experiential spaces in shaping consumer behaviour. Food courts, entertainment areas, lounges, landscaped spaces, public seating, and informal gathering areas can encourage users to spend more time within shopping environments beyond their immediate shopping activities. The availability and arrangement of these spaces may influence social interaction, perceived comfort, and the overall attractiveness of the mall. Understanding these relationships can support the development of shopping environments that respond to both commercial and social needs. The study aims to assess the effect of shopping mall design on consumer behaviour and identify architectural strategies that can enhance user experience within commercial environments. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, commercial developers, interior designers, retailers, and facility managers in planning shopping malls that are accessible, comfortable, visually engaging, and easy to navigate. By integrating spatial organization, environmental quality, wayfinding, and experiential design, shopping malls can better respond to the behavioural and functional needs of contemporary consumers.
