The Influence of Construction Waste on Project Environmental Performance
Abstract
Construction activities generate significant quantities of waste from materials such as concrete, timber, metals, bricks, blocks, packaging, plastics, and finishing products. The generation, handling, transportation, and disposal of this waste can influence the environmental performance of building projects. Poor waste management may contribute to land degradation, air and water pollution, resource depletion, and increased greenhouse gas emissions. This study therefore examines the influence of construction waste on project environmental performance and considers the environmental implications of waste generated during building construction. The study focuses on the types, sources, quantities, and management of construction waste generated at different stages of building projects. Waste from excavation, structural works, masonry, roofing, installations, finishing, and site operations is considered in relation to its environmental impacts. Attention is given to factors such as material wastage, inaccurate quantity estimation, poor storage, construction errors, material damage, excessive packaging, and inefficient construction methods that contribute to increased waste generation. Particular consideration is given to the relationship between construction waste and resource efficiency. Wasted materials represent the unnecessary consumption of raw materials, energy, water, labour, and transportation resources used in their production and delivery. The study examines how reducing material waste, improving material handling, reusing components, recycling suitable materials, and adopting more accurate procurement practices can reduce the environmental burden associated with construction activities. The research further examines the environmental effects of construction waste disposal. Improper disposal of waste can contribute to dust generation, soil contamination, blocked drainage systems, visual pollution, and the occupation of land for waste disposal. Transportation of construction waste to disposal sites may also increase fuel consumption and emissions. The study therefore considers waste segregation, on-site reuse, recycling, responsible disposal, and efficient waste transportation as important strategies for improving project environmental performance. The study also considers project management factors that influence construction waste generation and environmental outcomes. Effective site supervision, waste management planning, worker awareness, procurement control, accurate measurement, contractor practices, and client requirements can influence the quantity of waste produced. The availability of recycling facilities, local waste markets, regulatory requirements, and appropriate waste management infrastructure are also examined as factors that may encourage or constrain environmentally responsible waste practices. The study aims to assess the influence of construction waste on project environmental performance and identify strategies for reducing waste-related environmental impacts. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for contractors, architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, project managers, clients, and regulatory authorities seeking to improve environmental performance in building projects. By integrating waste prevention, material efficiency, reuse, recycling, responsible disposal, and effective site management, construction projects can reduce resource consumption and environmental impacts while supporting more sustainable development.
