The Influence of Entrance Design on Passenger Flow

Abstract

Entrance design plays an important role in controlling passenger movement and determining the efficiency of circulation within transportation buildings. As the primary transition point between external and internal environments, entrances influence how passengers enter, orient themselves, queue, and proceed toward different terminal functions. Poorly designed entrances may create congestion, conflicting movement patterns, inadequate visibility, and delays during periods of high passenger demand. Assessing the influence of entrance design is therefore important for improving passenger flow and the overall performance of transport facilities. This study examines the influence of entrance design on passenger flow, focusing on the relationship between entrance configuration, capacity, accessibility, and patterns of passenger movement. The study assesses entrance location, number, width, orientation, door configuration, thresholds, and connections to internal circulation routes. It also considers the relationship between entrances and ticketing areas, waiting spaces, security checkpoints, information points, and other major terminal functions. The study seeks to determine how effectively entrance arrangements accommodate varying passenger volumes. Particular attention is given to the spatial characteristics that influence movement through terminal entrances. Factors such as entrance width, queuing space, visibility, circulation direction, pedestrian approach routes, and separation of incoming and outgoing passengers are examined. The provision of automatic doors, ramps, accessible routes, security screening areas, and clear signage is also considered. Appropriate entrance planning can reduce bottlenecks, improve orientation, and facilitate smoother transitions between external and internal spaces. The study further considers passenger behaviour and user experience in relation to entrance design. Factors such as perceived accessibility, ease of navigation, waiting time, crowd density, comfort, safety, and visual connection with internal facilities are evaluated. The influence of luggage handling, passenger groups, elderly users, persons with disabilities, and passengers unfamiliar with the terminal environment is also considered. These factors can significantly affect the efficiency and convenience of passenger movement. Challenges affecting entrance performance may include inadequate capacity, poor positioning, insufficient queuing areas, unclear wayfinding, conflicting pedestrian movements, security-related bottlenecks, and limited accessibility provisions. These challenges can become more pronounced during peak travel periods, potentially resulting in overcrowding and delays. Addressing them requires an integrated approach that combines architectural planning, passenger flow analysis, accessibility, security requirements, and operational management. The study concludes that entrance design has a significant influence on passenger flow, circulation efficiency, accessibility, and user experience in transportation buildings. It recommends appropriately sized and positioned entrances, clear separation of movement streams, adequate queuing areas, accessible entry routes, effective wayfinding, and flexible arrangements capable of responding to changing passenger volumes. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, transportation planners, facility managers, and terminal operators in developing entrance systems that support safe, efficient, and comfortable passenger movement.
