The Influence of Public Seating Arrangement on Social Interaction

Abstract

Public seating areas are important components of urban and community spaces because they provide opportunities for people to rest, observe activities, communicate, and interact with others. The arrangement of seating can influence the distance, visibility, orientation, and degree of contact between users. Seating that is poorly positioned or arranged may discourage interaction, while appropriately configured seating can create opportunities for informal conversations and social encounters. Understanding this relationship is therefore important for creating public environments that support social interaction. This study examines the influence of public seating arrangement on social interaction in shared public spaces. It focuses on factors such as seating orientation, spacing, grouping, enclosure, visibility, and relationship to pedestrian movement. The study considers how different seating configurations, including linear, face-to-face, circular, clustered, and individually oriented arrangements, affect patterns of communication and interaction. It also examines how the location of seating in relation to activity areas influences the frequency and nature of social encounters. The research further investigates the relationship between seating arrangement and the duration of public-space use. Seating positioned to provide comfortable views of surrounding activities may encourage users to remain longer and participate in informal social observation. Grouped seating can support conversations among acquaintances, while more dispersed arrangements may provide opportunities for casual encounters without requiring direct interaction. The study considers these spatial relationships in relation to different types of users and activities. In addition, environmental factors that influence seating use are considered. Shade, landscaping, thermal comfort, lighting, noise levels, pedestrian circulation, and proximity to commercial or recreational activities can affect where people choose to sit and interact. The relationship between physical comfort and social behaviour is therefore examined alongside the spatial configuration of seating. Providing a variety of seating options may also allow users to select environments that correspond to their preferred levels of interaction and privacy. Despite the potential of public seating to encourage social interaction, poorly designed seating areas may experience inadequate spacing, uncomfortable furniture, excessive exposure to heat, obstruction of pedestrian movement, or inappropriate positioning. These conditions can reduce the attractiveness of public spaces and limit opportunities for meaningful interaction. The study therefore emphasizes the importance of integrating seating arrangement with circulation, environmental comfort, visibility, activity patterns, and the broader spatial character of public places. The study aims to assess how public seating arrangements influence social interaction and identify spatial design factors that encourage comfortable and meaningful social encounters. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, landscape architects, urban designers, and planning authorities in designing public spaces that support social connection and inclusive use. Effective seating arrangements can contribute to more active, welcoming, and socially responsive public environments.
