The Influence of Residential Compound Layout on Neighbourhood Interaction
Abstract
Residential compound layout plays an important role in shaping social relationships and patterns of interaction within neighbourhoods. The arrangement of buildings, entrances, shared spaces, pathways, parking areas, boundaries, and landscape elements can influence how residents encounter and communicate with one another. In residential environments, spatial organization can either encourage social interaction and a sense of community or create physical and social separation among households. Understanding these relationships is therefore important for developing residential environments that support positive neighbourhood interaction. This study examines the influence of residential compound layout on neighbourhood interaction by assessing how the spatial organization of residential compounds affects residents' opportunities for social contact. It considers the relationship between private, semi-private, and shared spaces, as well as the positioning of entrances, pedestrian routes, communal areas, and building clusters. Attention is given to how these spatial arrangements influence the frequency, location, and nature of interactions among residents. The study further investigates the role of shared and transitional spaces in encouraging social interaction. Courtyards, verandas, walkways, communal gardens, seating areas, and open spaces can provide opportunities for informal encounters and collective activities. The visibility and accessibility of these spaces, together with their relationship to individual dwellings, may influence residents' willingness to use them and interact with neighbouring households. In addition to spatial arrangement, the study considers the influence of boundaries, privacy, security, and accessibility on neighbourhood interaction. Strong physical barriers and highly controlled entrances may reduce opportunities for spontaneous encounters, while appropriately designed boundaries can provide privacy without completely isolating residents. The study therefore explores how compound layouts can achieve a balance between individual residential security and opportunities for social engagement. The effectiveness of residential compound layouts may vary according to household characteristics, cultural practices, neighbourhood density, housing type, and patterns of outdoor activity. Different communities may have distinct expectations regarding privacy, communal living, and interaction with neighbours. Consequently, residential planning should respond to local social practices while providing flexible spaces that can accommodate both individual and collective activities. The study concludes that residential compound layout can significantly influence neighbourhood interaction by shaping opportunities for visibility, movement, encounter, and shared activities. Thoughtfully organized compounds can support social cohesion while maintaining appropriate levels of privacy, security, and personal space. The findings are expected to contribute to residential architectural and neighbourhood planning practices by emphasizing the importance of spatial organization in creating socially responsive and community-oriented residential environments.
