The Role of Landscape Architecture in Resort Development
Abstract
Landscape architecture plays an important role in shaping the environmental quality, visual character, functionality, and user experience of resort developments. Resorts depend heavily on their relationship with natural and constructed landscapes to provide recreation, relaxation, entertainment, and memorable experiences for visitors. Effective landscape planning can integrate buildings with surrounding vegetation, water features, terrain, circulation networks, and outdoor activity areas while protecting important natural resources. The role of landscape architecture is therefore essential in creating resort environments that are attractive, functional, environmentally responsive, and suitable for diverse recreational activities. This study examines the role of landscape architecture in resort development, with emphasis on the planning and design of outdoor spaces and their relationship with resort buildings and facilities. It considers the integration of gardens, swimming pools, pedestrian pathways, recreational spaces, courtyards, plazas, water features, outdoor dining areas, and natural landscapes. Appropriate spatial organization can improve movement, accessibility, privacy, views, and opportunities for social interaction while creating a coherent relationship between indoor and outdoor environments. The study further explores the contribution of landscape architecture to the environmental sustainability of resort developments. The selection of indigenous and climate-appropriate vegetation can reduce irrigation requirements and support local biodiversity. Natural shading, vegetation buffers, permeable surfaces, rainwater management, and appropriate site planning can improve microclimatic conditions and reduce environmental impacts. Landscape elements can also provide thermal comfort for outdoor users by reducing heat exposure and creating shaded areas around buildings and recreational spaces. Another important consideration is the relationship between landscape design and the identity of resort environments. Landscape architecture can respond to local culture, geography, climate, and natural characteristics to create distinctive places that contribute to visitor experiences. The use of local materials, indigenous plant species, traditional landscape features, and culturally meaningful spatial elements can strengthen the sense of place. Careful preservation of existing vegetation, natural terrain, water bodies, and significant ecological features can further integrate resort development with its surrounding environment. Despite its potential, landscape architecture in resort development faces challenges including high maintenance requirements, water consumption, environmental degradation, inappropriate plant selection, inadequate site planning, and pressure to maximize developable land. Poorly planned resort landscapes may disrupt natural ecosystems or create excessive dependence on irrigation and energy-intensive maintenance. Addressing these challenges requires collaboration among landscape architects, architects, environmental specialists, developers, tourism professionals, engineers, local authorities, and communities. Sustainable landscape management strategies are also necessary to maintain environmental quality throughout the life of a resort. The study concludes that landscape architecture is a critical component of successful resort development because it connects built facilities with natural and recreational environments while contributing to aesthetics, functionality, environmental performance, and visitor experience. Effective landscape planning can create comfortable outdoor environments, strengthen local identity, protect natural resources, and improve the overall quality of resort developments. The study is expected to provide useful insights for landscape architects, architects, developers, tourism planners, researchers, and policymakers seeking to create sustainable, attractive, and environmentally responsive resort environments.
