OVERVIEW OF WEBSITES DEVELOPMENTS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The evolution of websites has been integral to the development of the internet, serving as virtual gateways to information, services, and interactions. From the static pages of the early web to the dynamic and interactive platforms of today, the journey of website development reflects the rapid pace of technological advancement and the changing needs and expectations of users.

With growing specialization in the information technology field, there is a strong tendency to distinguish between web design and web development. Web design is a kind of graphic design intended for the development and styling of objects of the internet’s information environment to provide them with high-end consumer features and aesthetic qualities. This definition separates web design from programming, emphasizing the functional features of a web site, as well as positioning web design as a kind of graphic design.

The process of designing web pages, web sites, web applications or multimedia for web may utilize multiple disciplines such animation, authoring, communication, design, corporate identity, human-computer interaction, information architecture, interaction design, marketing, photography, search engine optimization and typography etc. Web pages and websites can be state pages, or can be programmed to be dynamic pages that automatically adopt content or visual appearance depending on a variety of factors, such as input from the end-user, input from the webmaster or changes in the computing environment (such as the site’s associated database having been modfied). Accessible web design however permits an exception where tables for layout either make sense when linearized or an alternate version [perhaps linearized] is made available website accessibility is also changing as it is imparted by content management system that allow changes to be made to WebPages  without the need of obtaining web- based programming language.     It is very important that several different components of web development and interaction can work together in order for the web to be accessible to people with disabilities. These components include:

-               Content – the information in a web page or web application

-               Web browser, media players, and other ‘user agents’

-               Users knowledge, experiences and in some cases, adaptive, strategies using the web.

-               Developers – designers, codes, authors etc. including developer with disabilities and users who contribute content.

-               Authoring tools – software that creates websites.

-               Evaluation tools – web accessibility evaluation tools, HTML validators, CSS validators, etc.  

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the significant progress in website development, there remain challenges and issues that need to be addressed. These include ensuring accessibility, usability, security, and scalability while keeping pace with emerging technologies and user preferences.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to determine the trajectory and impact of website developments. Specific objectives include:

i. To evaluate the impact of emerging technologies on website design and functionality.

ii. To determine the influence of user experience (UX) design on website engagement and retention.

iii. To find out the role of accessibility standards in ensuring inclusivity in website development.

1.4 Research Questions

i. What is the impact of emerging technologies on the design and functionality of websites?

ii. What is the influence of user experience (UX) design on website engagement and retention?

iii. How does adherence to accessibility standards contribute to inclusivity in website development?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Hypothesis I

H0: There is no significant impact of emerging technologies on website design and functionality.

H1: There is a significant impact of emerging technologies on website design and functionality.

Hypothesis II

H0: There is no significant influence of user experience (UX) design on website engagement and retention.

H2: There is a significant influence of user experience (UX) design on website engagement and retention.

Hypothesis III

H0: There is no significant contribution of adherence to accessibility standards to inclusivity in website development.

H3: There is a significant contribution of adherence to accessibility standards to inclusivity in website development.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study holds significance for various stakeholders involved in website development, including web designers, developers, businesses, and users. By understanding the trends, challenges, and opportunities in website development, stakeholders can make informed decisions to enhance user experiences, improve accessibility, and stay competitive in the digital landscape.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the overview of website developments, including technological advancements, design trends, user experience considerations, and accessibility standards. It does not delve into specific coding languages or frameworks but provides a comprehensive understanding of the broader landscape of website development.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

While this study aims to provide insights into website developments, it may have limitations due to the vast and rapidly evolving nature of the field. Additionally, the scope of the study may restrict in-depth analysis of specific aspects of website development.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Website Development: The process of creating, designing, and maintaining websites.

User Experience (UX) Design: The process of enhancing user satisfaction by improving the usability, accessibility, and pleasure provided in the interaction between users and websites.

Accessibility Standards: Guidelines and requirements aimed at ensuring websites are usable by people with disabilities.

Emerging Technologies: New and developing technologies that have the potential to significantly impact website development, such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and blockchain.
