CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and atypical mycobacterial infections, particularly Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), have emerged as critical health challenges globally, especially in immunocompromised individuals (Zhang et al., 2019). HIV, a retrovirus responsible for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), weakens the immune system, making patients susceptible to various opportunistic infections, including those caused by atypical mycobacteria (Martínez et al., 2020). 1.4 Research Questions

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Hypothesis II H0: There is no significant prevalence of atypical mycobacterial infections among HIV-positive individuals.
H2: There is a significant prevalence of atypical mycobacterial infections among HIV-positive individuals.

Hypothesis III H0: There is no significant increase in susceptibility to atypical mycobacterial infections among HIV patients.
H3: There is a significant increase in susceptibility to atypical mycobacterial infections among HIV patients.

1.6 Significance of the Study
