THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF OZA-NOGOGO PEOPLE DATING FROM EARLY TIMES TO IN THE PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The historical study of the Oza-Nogogo people provides crucial insights into the cultural, social, and political dynamics that shaped their community over centuries. Understanding their early development is essential for appreciating their present-day identity and challenges.

Before 1960, the region now known as Nigeria was made up of independent kingdoms. While some were large, others were small. The small ones tend to take shelter under the big kingdoms for protection and security as well as free trade. This reliance on bigger kingdom is due to territorial closeness, tribal connection and trade relations. Oza-nogogo, a small kingdom in today’s Delta State of Nigeria, had at one time relied on great Benin Kingdom for security and trade connection. Furthermore, these kingdoms from the North to South, West to East of Africa lacked written source and their personal record because they saw the important of education at the eleventh hour. The Ika community whose origin and culture as well as the political system is traceable to Benin. The Oza-nogogo in particular, was under the guidance of the Benin kingdom before colonial rule, however, after being made a village that constitute the Ika community under the Agbor clan, she created a language known as Ozara or Oza which was a mixture of Edoid and Ika languages. 

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the rich cultural heritage of the Oza-Nogogo people, there is a gap in comprehensive documentation regarding their historical evolution up to the pre-colonial period. This study seeks to address this gap by providing a detailed historical narrative.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to determine the historical evolution of the Oza-Nogogo people. Specific objectives include:

i. To evaluate the impact of early migrations on the formation of Oza-Nogogo society.

ii. To determine the socio-economic structures that characterized Oza-Nogogo communities in the pre-colonial era.

iii. To find out the cultural practices and beliefs that shaped the identity of Oza-Nogogo people before colonial influence.

1.4 Research Questions

i. What is the impact of early migrations on the formation of Oza-Nogogo society?

ii. What were the socio-economic structures that characterized Oza-Nogogo communities in the pre-colonial era?

iii. How did cultural practices and beliefs shape the identity of Oza-Nogogo people before colonial influence?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Hypothesis I

H0: There is no significant impact of early migrations on the formation of Oza-Nogogo society.

H1: There is a significant impact of early migrations on the formation of Oza-Nogogo society.

Hypothesis II

H0: There were no significant socio-economic structures characterizing Oza-Nogogo communities in the pre-colonial era.

H2: There were significant socio-economic structures characterizing Oza-Nogogo communities in the pre-colonial era.

Hypothesis III

H0: There were no significant cultural practices and beliefs shaping the identity of Oza-Nogogo people before colonial influence.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it contributes to the preservation of the historical heritage of the Oza-Nogogo people, providing foundational knowledge for future research and fostering cultural pride and understanding among community members.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the historical development of the Oza-Nogogo people from ancient times to the pre-colonial period, with an emphasis on socio-economic, cultural, and political aspects within their geographical context.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

Limitations may include the scarcity of primary sources and the challenges of interpreting oral histories. Additionally, the scope may be limited by the availability of documented evidence from the pre-colonial era.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Oza-Nogogo people: Refers to the ethnic group inhabiting a specific geographical area known as Oza-Nogogo.

Pre-colonial period: The historical era before the advent of colonial influence and administration.
