1.1 Background of the Study

The political landscape of Nigeria is intricately woven with the concept of godfatherism, a term that denotes a system of political patronage and influence exercised by powerful individuals, often at the expense of democratic ideals. This phenomenon has become a significant factor in understanding the political dynamics and economic growth of the country. Godfatherism often manifests through the control exerted by these political godfathers over elected officials, shaping their decisions and policies in ways that may not align with the interests of their constituents (Ojo, 2018). This situation undermines democratic processes, as elected officials may prioritize the agendas of their godfathers over those of the electorate, leading to a disconnect between the government and the governed.

In Nigeria, the origins of godfatherism can be traced back to the colonial era, where power dynamics were heavily influenced by colonial administrators who favored certain local leaders (Adetula, 2021). This practice has evolved over the decades, particularly post-independence, where influential politicians have leveraged their resources and connections to dominate the political sphere. The ramifications of such dominance are profound, affecting not only political stability but also economic development. When political decisions are made based on personal interests rather than public good, economic policies can become skewed, leading to misallocation of resources and stunted growth (Adeniran, 2020).

Moreover, godfatherism contributes to the entrenchment of corruption within the political system. Politicians who owe their positions to powerful godfathers may engage in corrupt practices to repay their benefactors, thereby perpetuating a cycle of corruption that stifles economic progress (Oluoch, 2019).
