Effect of Autism Awareness Education on Autism Recognition among Primary School Teachers in Nigeria
Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication and interaction, as well as restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities. Early recognition of developmental characteristics is important because timely identification may facilitate appropriate assessment, referral, educational support, and intervention. Primary school teachers are strategically positioned to recognize developmental characteristics because they interact regularly with children and observe their communication, social interaction, learning, behaviour, and classroom functioning. Autism awareness education provides teachers with knowledge about autism, common characteristics, early developmental indicators, communication and behavioural differences, misconceptions about autism, appropriate classroom responses, and referral pathways. Autism recognition refers to teachers' ability to identify characteristics that may be associated with autism and distinguish them from common childhood behaviour or other developmental difficulties requiring further assessment. In Nigeria, limited autism awareness among teachers, misconceptions, stigma, inadequate teacher training, large classroom sizes, limited access to specialist services, and weak school-based developmental screening and referral systems may affect early recognition of autism-related characteristics. Effective autism awareness education may improve teachers' knowledge, recognition skills, confidence, and ability to identify children who may require further developmental assessment. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of autism awareness education on autism recognition among primary school teachers in Nigeria. The study is anchored on Social Cognitive Theory, the Health Belief Model, and the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, behavioural capabilities, social influences, and environmental conditions in shaping teachers' responses to children with developmental differences. The Health Belief Model provides a basis for understanding how awareness of developmental characteristics, perceived importance of early recognition, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence teachers' recognition and referral-related responses. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how structured autism awareness education may improve teachers' knowledge and recognition of autism-related characteristics. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how autism awareness education may influence autism recognition among primary school teachers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from primary school teachers in selected public and private primary schools in Nigeria using a structured self-administered questionnaire, autism awareness and knowledge assessment, and standardized autism recognition assessment involving age-appropriate classroom and developmental scenarios. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, local government areas, schools, and eligible teachers. Where feasible, selected schools or teacher groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Teachers in the intervention group will receive structured autism awareness education covering the nature of autism, common characteristics, early developmental indicators, social communication differences, restricted or repetitive behaviours, sensory characteristics, common misconceptions, classroom observations, appropriate teacher responses, and referral pathways for children requiring further developmental assessment. Autism recognition will be assessed using indicators such as identification of social communication differences, recognition of restricted or repetitive behaviours, identification of relevant developmental characteristics, differentiation between possible autism-related characteristics and typical classroom behaviour, and appropriate recognition of situations requiring further developmental assessment. Case-based classroom scenarios will be incorporated where feasible to assess teachers' ability to apply autism recognition knowledge to realistic school situations. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize teachers' sociodemographic and professional characteristics, previous exposure to special-needs or developmental education, autism awareness, exposure to autism education, and recognition scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the effect of autism awareness education on autism recognition. Where appropriate, pre-intervention and post-intervention recognition scores will be compared. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instruments, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that autism awareness education has a significant positive effect on autism recognition among primary school teachers in Nigeria. Teachers exposed to structured autism awareness education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of autism and greater ability to recognize relevant social communication, behavioural, developmental, and sensory characteristics in classroom settings. Education may improve teachers' ability to distinguish possible autism-related characteristics from common childhood behaviours and recognize situations that warrant further professional assessment. It may also reduce misconceptions and stigma surrounding autism and improve teachers' confidence in communicating developmental concerns appropriately with parents, school authorities, and relevant healthcare or educational professionals. Case-based and practical education is expected to strengthen recognition skills by allowing teachers to apply knowledge to realistic classroom situations. However, education alone may not guarantee timely diagnosis or intervention because teachers may continue to face barriers such as limited access to developmental assessment services, shortage of specialists, inadequate school-health resources, large class sizes, parental concerns or resistance, stigma, and weak referral systems. Consequently, autism awareness education is expected to be most effective when supported by school-based developmental monitoring, clear referral pathways, collaboration between schools and healthcare professionals, teacher support systems, and accessible developmental assessment services. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on autism, developmental health, school health, teacher education, child development, early recognition of developmental conditions, inclusive education, special-needs education, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the effect of autism awareness education on autism recognition among primary school teachers. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, state ministries of health and education, primary school management authorities, teacher training institutions, healthcare professionals, special-needs education programmes, child-development organizations, professional associations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening autism awareness and early recognition in schools. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating autism awareness into teacher education and continuing professional development, strengthening school-based developmental monitoring, developing standardized autism recognition and referral guidelines, improving collaboration between teachers and healthcare professionals, reducing autism-related stigma and misconceptions, and enhancing access to appropriate developmental assessment and support services for children in Nigeria.
