Effect of Battery Disposal Education on Safe Battery Disposal Practices among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Improper disposal of used batteries is an emerging environmental health concern because batteries may contain metals and chemical substances that can contaminate soil, water, and the surrounding environment when discarded indiscriminately. University students frequently use batteries in mobile devices, rechargeable equipment, remote controls, electronic accessories, and other consumer products, yet many may have limited knowledge of appropriate battery disposal methods and the environmental and health risks associated with improper disposal. Disposal of used batteries with general household or campus waste may contribute to environmental contamination and increase potential exposure to hazardous substances. Battery disposal education provides an opportunity to improve students' knowledge of battery-related environmental hazards and promote appropriate disposal, collection, storage, and recycling practices. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of battery disposal education on safe battery disposal practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Social Ecological Model. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of susceptibility to environmental hazards, perceived severity of the consequences of improper battery disposal, perceived benefits of safe disposal practices, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their disposal behaviours. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, behavioural modelling, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and environmental influences in developing and maintaining appropriate waste-management practices. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the influence of individual, interpersonal, institutional, community, environmental, and regulatory factors on battery disposal behaviour. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how battery disposal education may influence safe battery disposal practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible students. Battery disposal education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to battery-waste education sessions, frequency and duration of education, knowledge of battery types, awareness of hazardous components, understanding of environmental contamination, knowledge of appropriate storage of used batteries, awareness of collection points, knowledge of recycling options, understanding of battery leakage risks, and awareness of relevant waste-management regulations and disposal guidelines. Safe battery disposal practices will be assessed using indicators such as separating used batteries from general waste, storing used batteries safely before disposal, using designated battery collection points, participating in battery recycling programmes where available, avoiding disposal in open spaces, drains or water bodies, preventing burning of batteries, avoiding handling damaged or leaking batteries without appropriate precautions, and following university or local waste-management guidelines. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, battery-disposal knowledge assessment instruments, waste-management practice tools, campus observation checklists, records from university waste-management programmes, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, battery-use patterns, exposure to disposal education, knowledge of battery hazards, and disposal practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of battery disposal education on safe battery disposal practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, safe disposal practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that battery disposal education has a significant positive effect on safe battery disposal practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical battery disposal education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of battery-related environmental hazards and safer disposal behaviours than students without comparable exposure. Education may improve students' ability to distinguish used batteries from ordinary waste, recognize potentially hazardous battery conditions, store used batteries appropriately, identify designated collection points, and participate in recycling or other approved disposal options. Practical demonstrations and visible campus disposal facilities may further strengthen students' confidence and willingness to adopt appropriate practices. However, inadequate battery collection infrastructure, limited availability of recycling facilities, weak enforcement of waste-management regulations, lack of convenient disposal points, low institutional support, and students' perceptions that individual disposal actions have little environmental impact may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, continuous, and institutionally supported battery disposal education, combined with convenient collection and recycling systems, to contribute significantly to improved safe battery disposal practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on battery waste management, electronic waste, environmental health education, waste disposal practices, recycling behaviour, environmental pollution prevention, university environmental health, health promotion, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Environment, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, state environmental protection agencies, universities, local government authorities, environmental health officers, waste-management companies, recycling organizations, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving battery-waste management. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating battery-waste education into university environmental health programmes, establishing convenient battery collection points, strengthening campus recycling systems, increasing student awareness of hazardous waste, promoting responsible disposal behaviours, and developing sustainable battery-waste management interventions across Nigerian universities.
