Effect of Chemical Safety Education on Safe Chemical Handling Practices among Laboratory Workers in Nigeria
Abstract
Chemical exposure is an important occupational health and safety concern among laboratory workers because routine laboratory activities may involve the handling, preparation, storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous chemicals. Laboratory workers may be exposed to chemicals through inhalation, skin contact, eye contact, accidental ingestion, spills, fires, or inappropriate disposal, potentially resulting in acute poisoning, burns, respiratory problems, skin disorders, and other adverse health outcomes. Chemical safety education provides laboratory workers with knowledge and practical skills relating to chemical hazards, hazard identification and classification, appropriate labelling, safe storage, handling and transfer procedures, use of safety data sheets, personal protective equipment, ventilation, spill management, waste disposal, emergency response, and exposure prevention. Safe chemical handling practices refer to behaviours adopted by laboratory workers to minimize chemical exposure and prevent accidents, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment, correct chemical labelling and storage, safe handling and transfer, proper use of fume hoods and ventilation systems, appropriate waste disposal, spill prevention and response, and compliance with established laboratory safety procedures. In Nigeria, inadequate chemical safety knowledge, limited access to appropriate protective equipment, poor laboratory infrastructure, inadequate ventilation, insufficient safety supervision, and inconsistent laboratory safety policies may affect safe chemical handling practices. Effective chemical safety education may improve workers' knowledge, risk perception, practical skills, and adherence to recommended chemical handling procedures. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of chemical safety education on safe chemical handling practices among laboratory workers in Nigeria. The study is anchored on Social Cognitive Theory, the Health Belief Model, and the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, behavioural capabilities, social influences, and environmental conditions in shaping occupational safety behaviour. The Health Belief Model explains preventive occupational health behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding laboratory workers' adoption of safe chemical handling practices. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how improved knowledge and attitudes resulting from chemical safety education may influence safe chemical handling practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how chemical safety education may influence safe chemical handling practices among laboratory workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from laboratory workers in selected medical, academic, research, industrial, and other laboratories in Nigeria using a structured self-administered questionnaire, chemical safety knowledge assessment, and an observational laboratory safety checklist. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, institutions or organizations, laboratories, laboratory units, and eligible laboratory workers. Where feasible, selected laboratories or worker groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Workers in the intervention group will receive structured chemical safety education covering chemical hazard identification and classification, chemical labelling, safe storage, handling and transfer, interpretation of safety data sheets, appropriate use of personal protective equipment, fume hood and ventilation practices, spill prevention and response, chemical waste management, emergency procedures, and exposure prevention. Safe chemical handling practices will be assessed using indicators such as appropriate use of personal protective equipment, correct chemical labelling and storage, safe chemical transfer and handling, appropriate use of fume hoods and ventilation systems, proper chemical waste disposal, spill prevention and response, and adherence to laboratory safety procedures. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize workers' sociodemographic and occupational characteristics, chemical safety knowledge, exposure to education, and safe chemical handling practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the effect of chemical safety education on safe chemical handling practices. Where appropriate, pre-intervention and post-intervention safety practice scores will be compared. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instruments, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that chemical safety education has a significant positive effect on safe chemical handling practices among laboratory workers in Nigeria. Laboratory workers exposed to structured chemical safety education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of chemical hazards and greater compliance with recommended safety procedures. Education may improve workers' ability to identify hazardous chemicals, interpret safety information, use personal protective equipment correctly, store and transfer chemicals safely, use appropriate ventilation systems, manage spills, and dispose of chemical waste appropriately. It may also strengthen workers' confidence in responding to chemical emergencies and reporting unsafe conditions. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained safe chemical handling practices because laboratory workers may continue to face barriers such as inadequate laboratory infrastructure, poor ventilation, limited access to protective equipment, insufficient safety supplies, overcrowded laboratory spaces, and weak institutional safety supervision. Consequently, chemical safety education is expected to be most effective when supported by appropriate laboratory infrastructure, adequate personal protective equipment, functional ventilation systems, clearly established safety protocols, regular safety inspections, and effective institutional safety management. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on laboratory safety, chemical exposure prevention, occupational health, workplace safety, environmental health, health education, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the effect of chemical safety education on safe chemical handling practices among laboratory workers. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, universities, teaching hospitals, research institutions, industrial laboratories, occupational health professionals, laboratory managers, workplace safety officers, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing occupational chemical exposure. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening chemical safety education, improving access to appropriate personal protective equipment, enhancing laboratory ventilation and infrastructure, strengthening chemical waste management systems, conducting regular laboratory safety inspections, and promoting a strong chemical safety culture across laboratories in Nigeria.
