Effect of Child Abuse Awareness on Child Protection Practices among Primary School Teachers in Nigeria
Abstract
Child abuse is an important public health, child rights, and social welfare concern that can have serious physical, psychological, emotional, developmental, and educational consequences for children. Primary school teachers occupy an important position in child protection because they interact regularly with children and may be among the adults most likely to observe changes in behaviour, unexplained injuries, emotional distress, neglect, or other indicators of possible abuse. Child abuse awareness provides teachers with information about the different forms of child abuse, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and neglect, risk factors, warning signs, prevention, appropriate responses, reporting responsibilities, and available child protection services. Child protection practices refer to actions undertaken by teachers to safeguard children from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and other forms of harm, including recognizing warning signs, responding appropriately to concerns, documenting relevant observations, reporting suspected cases through appropriate channels, maintaining professional boundaries, promoting safe classroom environments, and referring children to appropriate support services. In Nigeria, limited knowledge of child abuse indicators, uncertainty about reporting procedures, cultural norms, fear of consequences, inadequate institutional support, and limited access to child protection services may affect teachers' ability to implement appropriate child protection practices. Effective child abuse awareness may improve teachers' knowledge, confidence, and ability to adopt appropriate child protection practices. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of child abuse awareness on child protection practices among primary school teachers in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. The Health Belief Model explains preventive and protective behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding teachers' responses to potential child abuse and their adoption of protective practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, behavioural capabilities, and environmental conditions in shaping child protection behaviour. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how improved knowledge and attitudes resulting from child abuse awareness may influence child protection practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how child abuse awareness may influence child protection practices among primary school teachers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from primary school teachers in selected public and private primary schools in Nigeria using a structured self-administered questionnaire and, where appropriate, a child protection practice assessment checklist. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, local government areas, schools, and eligible primary school teachers. Where feasible, selected schools or teacher groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Teachers in the intervention group will receive structured child abuse awareness education covering forms of child abuse, risk factors, warning signs, child safeguarding principles, professional boundaries, appropriate teacher responses, documentation, reporting and referral procedures, confidentiality, and available child protection services. Child protection practices will be assessed using indicators such as recognition of suspected abuse, appropriate response to child protection concerns, documentation of concerns, knowledge and use of reporting channels, referral to appropriate services, maintenance of professional boundaries, classroom safety practices, and participation in child safeguarding activities. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize teachers' sociodemographic and professional characteristics, child abuse knowledge, exposure to awareness education, and child protection practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the effect of child abuse awareness on child protection practices. Appropriate diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that child abuse awareness has a significant positive effect on child protection practices among primary school teachers in Nigeria. Teachers exposed to structured child abuse awareness education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of different forms of abuse, greater ability to recognize warning signs, and improved adoption of appropriate child protection practices. Education may strengthen teachers' confidence in responding to suspected abuse, improve awareness of reporting and referral procedures, promote appropriate documentation, reinforce professional boundaries, and encourage the creation of safer classroom environments. However, awareness alone may not guarantee effective child protection practices because teachers may continue to face barriers such as unclear reporting procedures, inadequate institutional support, fear of retaliation, cultural attitudes, limited access to child protection services, and concerns about confidentiality. Consequently, child abuse awareness is expected to be most effective when supported by clear school safeguarding policies, accessible reporting mechanisms, trained child protection personnel, appropriate referral services, teacher support systems, and effective collaboration between schools, families, healthcare providers, social services, and relevant authorities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on child protection, child abuse prevention, school health, teacher education, child safeguarding, health promotion, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the effect of child abuse awareness on child protection practices among primary school teachers. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, state ministries of education, state ministries responsible for child and social welfare, Universal Basic Education authorities, school management boards, primary school administrators, teachers, healthcare professionals, social workers, child protection organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening school-based child protection. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating child abuse awareness into teacher training and continuing professional development, strengthening school safeguarding policies, improving reporting and referral systems, increasing access to child protection services, and promoting safe and protective learning environments for children across Nigeria.
