Effect of Cyberbullying Awareness Education on Cyberbullying Prevention Practices among Secondary School Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Cyberbullying has become an important adolescent health, safety, and social concern as increasing access to smartphones, social media platforms, messaging applications, online gaming, and other digital technologies creates opportunities for harmful online interactions. Secondary school students may experience or participate in cyberbullying through threatening messages, online harassment, spreading rumours, sharing embarrassing content, impersonation, exclusion, or other forms of harmful digital behaviour. Cyberbullying may negatively affect students' emotional well-being, social relationships, academic participation, and sense of safety. Cyberbullying awareness education provides students with knowledge and practical skills relating to the meaning and forms of cyberbullying, associated risks, responsible digital behaviour, privacy protection, safe online communication, appropriate responses to cyberbullying incidents, reporting procedures, blocking and restricting harmful contacts, preservation of evidence, and appropriate sources of support. Cyberbullying prevention practices refer to behaviours adopted by students to prevent, reduce, or appropriately respond to cyberbullying, including responsible online communication, protection of personal information, appropriate privacy settings, avoidance of harmful online interactions, reporting abusive behaviour, blocking offenders, preserving relevant evidence, and seeking assistance from trusted adults or appropriate authorities. In Nigeria, limited awareness of cyberbullying risks, inadequate digital safety education, unrestricted access to digital platforms, peer influence, weak school-based online safety programmes, and limited awareness of reporting and support mechanisms may affect students' ability to prevent and respond appropriately to cyberbullying. Effective cyberbullying awareness education may improve students' knowledge, digital safety skills, risk perception, and adoption of appropriate cyberbullying prevention practices. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of cyberbullying awareness education on cyberbullying prevention practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is anchored on Social Cognitive Theory, the Health Belief Model, and the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, peer influences, behavioural capabilities, and environmental conditions in shaping students' online behaviour. The Health Belief Model explains preventive behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding students' adoption of cyberbullying prevention practices. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how improved knowledge and attitudes resulting from cyberbullying awareness education may influence students' online safety practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how cyberbullying awareness education may influence cyberbullying prevention practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from secondary school students in selected public and private secondary schools in Nigeria using a structured self-administered questionnaire and a cyberbullying prevention practices checklist. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, local government areas, schools, classes, and eligible students. Where feasible, selected schools or student groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Students in the intervention group will receive structured cyberbullying awareness education covering the meaning and forms of cyberbullying, common online risks, responsible digital citizenship, privacy and account security, safe social media use, appropriate online communication, responding to cyberbullying incidents, blocking and reporting abusive accounts, preservation of evidence, seeking support from trusted adults, and relevant school reporting procedures. Cyberbullying prevention practices will be assessed using indicators such as responsible online communication, protection of personal information, appropriate privacy settings, avoidance of harmful online interactions, reporting of cyberbullying, blocking abusive contacts, preservation of evidence, and seeking assistance from trusted adults or appropriate support services. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' sociodemographic and academic characteristics, cyberbullying awareness, exposure to education, and prevention practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the effect of cyberbullying awareness education on cyberbullying prevention practices. Where appropriate, pre-intervention and post-intervention practice scores will be compared. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that cyberbullying awareness education has a significant positive effect on cyberbullying prevention practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured cyberbullying awareness education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of cyberbullying risks and greater adoption of recommended online safety practices. Education may improve students' ability to recognize cyberbullying, protect personal information, use appropriate privacy settings, communicate responsibly online, report harmful behaviour, block abusive contacts, preserve evidence, and seek assistance when necessary. It may also improve students' understanding of the potential emotional, social, and academic consequences of cyberbullying. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained prevention practices because students may continue to face barriers such as peer pressure, fear of retaliation, unrestricted digital access, limited parental supervision, inadequate school reporting systems, and rapidly changing online platforms. Consequently, cyberbullying awareness education is expected to be most effective when supported by school-based digital safety policies, parental involvement, accessible reporting mechanisms, responsible technology use, teacher supervision, and appropriate student support services. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on cyberbullying prevention, adolescent health, digital safety, school health, health education, student well-being, online behaviour, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the effect of cyberbullying awareness education on cyberbullying prevention practices among secondary school students. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state ministries of education, school management authorities, teachers, parents, school counsellors, child protection professionals, digital safety organizations, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for preventing cyberbullying among adolescents. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating cyberbullying awareness into school health and digital literacy programmes, strengthening school reporting and response systems, improving parental and teacher awareness, promoting responsible digital citizenship, protecting students from harmful online interactions, and creating safer digital environments for secondary school students in Nigeria.
