Effect of Inclusive Health Education on Knowledge of Disability Prevention among Secondary School Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Disability prevention is an important public health concern because many disabling conditions may be associated with preventable injuries, infections, nutritional deficiencies, unsafe environments, chronic diseases, and other modifiable risk factors. Secondary school students are an important population for disability-prevention education because knowledge acquired during adolescence may influence health behaviours and risk awareness throughout life. However, students may have limited understanding of the causes of disability, preventable risk factors, injury prevention, infection prevention, nutrition, environmental safety, and the importance of early healthcare-seeking. Inclusive health education provides an approach to health promotion that incorporates disability-related information and ensures that health messages are accessible and understandable to students with different learning, communication, sensory, and physical needs. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of inclusive health education on knowledge of disability prevention among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Social Model of Disability, Social Cognitive Theory, and Health Belief Model. The Social Model of Disability emphasizes the role of social and environmental barriers in creating or worsening disability and promotes inclusive approaches that enable individuals to participate fully in health and educational activities. Social Cognitive Theory explains how students may acquire disability-prevention knowledge through observation, modelling, interaction, practical demonstrations, reinforcement, and self-efficacy. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of susceptibility to preventable disabling conditions, perceived severity, perceived benefits of preventive actions, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their understanding of disability prevention. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how inclusive health education may influence knowledge of disability prevention among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise students aged approximately 10–19 years enrolled in selected public and private secondary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, schools, classes, and eligible students. Inclusive health education will be assessed using indicators such as frequency and duration of health-education sessions, accessibility of teaching materials, use of disability-inclusive language, visual and audio teaching aids, simplified educational materials, teacher-led discussions, practical demonstrations, peer education, participation of students with disabilities, and coverage of disability-prevention topics. Knowledge of disability prevention will be assessed using indicators such as knowledge of preventable causes of disability, injury prevention, road and sports safety, infection prevention, immunization, nutrition, environmental safety, hearing and vision protection, prevention of substance-related harm, chronic disease prevention, early healthcare-seeking, and recognition of conditions requiring professional medical attention. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized disability-prevention knowledge assessment tools, school health records, lesson or health-education records, and relevant school health programme documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' characteristics, exposure to inclusive health education, and disability-prevention knowledge scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of inclusive health education on knowledge of disability prevention. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, knowledge scores before and after implementation of inclusive health education may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that inclusive health education has a significant positive effect on knowledge of disability prevention among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and accessible inclusive health education are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of preventable causes of disability and appropriate preventive measures than students without comparable exposure. Inclusive teaching methods may help students understand how injuries, infections, nutritional deficiencies, unsafe behaviours, environmental hazards, and other risk factors can contribute to disability. Practical demonstrations and student participation may strengthen knowledge retention and encourage students to apply preventive practices in school, at home, on the road, and within their communities. Inclusive education may also promote greater understanding and acceptance of students with disabilities and reduce misconceptions and disability-related stigma. However, inadequate teaching materials, limited teacher training, large class sizes, insufficient time for health education, inaccessible learning environments, and limited availability of disability-inclusive resources may reduce effectiveness. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, culturally appropriate, and disability-inclusive health education to contribute significantly to improved knowledge of disability prevention among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on inclusive health education, disability prevention, adolescent health, school health programmes, health promotion, disability awareness, health education, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, state ministries of health and education, secondary schools, school health personnel, teachers, public health practitioners, disability organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening disability-prevention education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating disability-prevention education into school health programmes, developing accessible and inclusive teaching materials, training teachers in disability-inclusive health education, strengthening practical health and safety education, improving school accessibility, promoting early healthcare-seeking, and reducing disability-related misconceptions and stigma among secondary school students across Nigeria.
