Effect of Menopause Education on Menopause Knowledge among Women Aged 40–55 Years in Nigeria

Abstract

Menopause is a natural biological transition that can be associated with physical, psychological, and reproductive changes that may affect women's health, wellbeing, and quality of life. Women approaching or experiencing menopause may experience symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, mood changes, menstrual irregularities, and other changes that can vary considerably among individuals. Adequate menopause knowledge can help women understand the menopausal transition, recognize common symptoms, distinguish symptoms that require medical assessment, adopt appropriate lifestyle practices, and seek professional healthcare when necessary. However, women aged 40–55 years in Nigeria may have inadequate or inaccurate knowledge of menopause because of limited health education, cultural beliefs, misconceptions, stigma, misinformation, and inadequate access to specialized women's health information. Menopause education provides an opportunity to improve women's understanding of menopause and promote informed health decisions during the menopausal transition. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of menopause education on menopause knowledge among women aged 40–55 years in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Health Promotion Model. The Health Belief Model explains how women's perceptions of the menopausal transition, perceived severity of menopause-related health problems, perceived benefits of obtaining accurate menopause information, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their acquisition and application of menopause knowledge. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes knowledge, self-efficacy, observational learning, social support, and environmental influences in developing appropriate health behaviours. The Health Promotion Model emphasizes individual experiences, perceived benefits and barriers, interpersonal influences, and behavioural factors that influence participation in health-promoting activities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how menopause education may influence menopause knowledge among women aged 40–55 years in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative analytical cross-sectional or quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise women aged 40–55 years attending selected hospitals, primary healthcare centres, women's health clinics, community health programmes, workplaces, and other relevant healthcare or community settings across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, communities, healthcare facilities, organizations, and eligible women. Menopause education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to structured menopause education, frequency and duration of educational sessions, information on the stages of menopause, common physical and psychological symptoms, causes of menopausal changes, lifestyle management, nutrition, physical activity, bone health, cardiovascular health, mental wellbeing, available treatment and symptom-management options, appropriate healthcare-seeking, and health education materials. Menopause knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as understanding of menopause and its stages, awareness of common symptoms, knowledge of health changes associated with menopause, recognition of symptoms requiring professional evaluation, knowledge of lifestyle and preventive health practices, awareness of available management options, and understanding of when to seek healthcare. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and appropriate validated menopause knowledge assessment instruments where available. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, exposure to menopause education, and levels of menopause knowledge. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of menopause education on menopause knowledge. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, menopause knowledge scores before and after structured education may be compared, while relevant age, educational, socioeconomic, reproductive, cultural, and healthcare-access factors are appropriately controlled. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that menopause education has a significant positive effect on menopause knowledge among women aged 40–55 years in Nigeria. Women who receive structured and evidence-based menopause education are expected to demonstrate higher knowledge scores regarding the menopausal transition, common symptoms, health implications, lifestyle management, and appropriate healthcare-seeking than women with limited exposure to menopause education. Education may correct misconceptions, reduce fear and stigma surrounding menopause, improve women's confidence in managing menopausal changes, and encourage appropriate use of healthcare services when necessary. Interactive education and opportunities for women to discuss their experiences with trained healthcare providers may further improve understanding and address culturally influenced misconceptions. However, cultural beliefs, low health literacy, limited access to reliable health information, financial barriers, stigma, and inadequate availability of specialized menopause services may limit the effectiveness of education. The study therefore expects accessible, culturally appropriate, evidence-based, and regularly reinforced menopause education to contribute significantly to improved menopause knowledge among women aged 40–55 years in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on menopause education, menopause knowledge, menopausal health, women's health, healthy ageing, reproductive health, health education, symptom management, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, state ministries of health, hospitals, primary healthcare centres, women's health clinics, healthcare providers, community health workers, menopause and healthy ageing programmes, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving women's health during the menopausal transition. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating menopause education into routine women's health and primary healthcare services, training healthcare providers in culturally sensitive menopause counselling, developing appropriate educational materials, improving access to reliable menopause information, strengthening community-based women's health programmes, and promoting informed and healthy management of menopause among women across Nigeria.
