Effect of Occupational Chemical Safety Education on Chemical Handling Practices among Laboratory Workers in Nigeria
Abstract
Occupational exposure to hazardous chemicals is an important workplace health and safety concern among laboratory workers because improper handling, storage, transportation, mixing, or disposal of chemicals may result in burns, poisoning, respiratory problems, eye injuries, skin damage, fire, explosion, environmental contamination, and other occupational hazards. Laboratory workers in healthcare, research, educational, industrial, and diagnostic settings may routinely handle chemical substances that require appropriate knowledge and safety precautions. Occupational chemical safety education provides laboratory workers with information and practical training on chemical hazards, hazard identification and labelling, safety data sheets, appropriate storage, safe handling and transfer, use of personal protective equipment, spill management, emergency procedures, waste disposal, exposure prevention, and reporting of chemical incidents. Chemical handling practices refer to the behaviours and procedures adopted by laboratory workers when receiving, storing, preparing, using, transferring, and disposing of chemicals, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment, correct labelling, safe storage, proper handling procedures, spill response, and appropriate chemical waste disposal. In Nigeria, unsafe chemical handling practices may be associated with inadequate safety training, limited access to personal protective equipment, poor laboratory infrastructure, inadequate safety supervision, weak enforcement of occupational safety regulations, and limited awareness of chemical hazards. Effective occupational chemical safety education may improve workers' knowledge and practical competencies and encourage safer chemical handling practices. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of occupational chemical safety education on chemical handling practices among laboratory workers in Nigeria. The study is anchored on Social Cognitive Theory, the Experiential Learning Theory, and the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, observational learning, workplace social influences, and environmental conditions in shaping occupational safety behaviour. Experiential Learning Theory provides a framework for understanding how demonstrations, simulations, hands-on exercises, practical experience, and feedback facilitate the acquisition and retention of chemical safety skills. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how occupational chemical safety education may improve workers' knowledge and attitudes and translate these improvements into appropriate chemical handling practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how occupational chemical safety education may influence chemical handling practices among laboratory workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from laboratory workers in selected medical laboratories, research laboratories, university laboratories, industrial laboratories, and other appropriate laboratory settings in Nigeria using structured questionnaires, chemical-safety knowledge assessments, practical simulation exercises, and standardized chemical handling practice checklists. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, local government areas, laboratory institutions, facilities, and eligible laboratory workers. Where feasible, selected laboratory workers or laboratory facilities will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Participants in the intervention group will receive structured occupational chemical safety education through lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, simulated chemical-handling scenarios, visual materials, and supervised safety drills. The education will cover chemical hazard identification, hazard communication and labelling, safety data sheets, appropriate personal protective equipment, chemical storage and segregation, safe transfer and preparation, prevention of chemical exposure, spill management, emergency response, chemical waste disposal, incident reporting, and workplace safety procedures. Chemical handling practices will be assessed using indicators such as appropriate use of personal protective equipment, correct chemical labelling, safe storage and segregation, appropriate handling and transfer, use of safety equipment, spill response, chemical waste disposal, and reporting of chemical incidents. Where feasible, direct observation and simulation-based assessments will complement self-reported practices to provide objective evidence of workers' safety performance. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' sociodemographic and professional characteristics, previous safety training, chemical-safety knowledge, and chemical handling practice scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the effect of occupational chemical safety education on chemical handling practices. Where appropriate, handling practices before and after the intervention will be compared. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instruments, inter-rater reliability of observational assessments, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that occupational chemical safety education has a significant positive effect on chemical handling practices among laboratory workers in Nigeria. Laboratory workers exposed to structured chemical safety education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of chemical hazards and greater compliance with appropriate handling and safety procedures. Education is expected to improve the consistent use of personal protective equipment, chemical labelling, storage and segregation, safe chemical transfer, spill response, emergency procedures, and chemical waste disposal. Practical and simulation-based training is expected to be particularly effective because it allows laboratory workers to apply safety principles to realistic chemical-handling situations and receive immediate feedback. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained safe practices because laboratory workers may continue to face barriers such as inadequate personal protective equipment, poor ventilation, insufficient safety equipment, inadequate waste-disposal facilities, heavy workloads, weak supervision, and limited enforcement of occupational safety regulations. Consequently, occupational chemical safety education may be most effective when supported by appropriate laboratory infrastructure, adequate personal protective equipment, functional safety systems, regular refresher training, effective supervision, and strong occupational safety policies. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on occupational chemical safety education, laboratory safety, chemical handling practices, occupational health, workplace safety, health education, environmental health, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the effect of chemical safety education on laboratory workers' safety practices. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, healthcare institutions, universities, research institutions, medical laboratories, industrial laboratories, occupational health practitioners, laboratory management bodies, public health practitioners, health educators, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing occupational chemical exposure. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating chemical safety education into laboratory training and continuing professional development, improving access to personal protective equipment and safety facilities, strengthening laboratory safety supervision, establishing regular competency assessments, improving chemical waste-management systems, and promoting sustainable safe chemical handling practices among laboratory workers in Nigeria.
