Effect of Physical Activity Education on Exercise Practices among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Regular physical activity is an important component of healthy living and may contribute to improved cardiovascular health, healthy body weight, mental wellbeing, physical fitness, and reduced risk of non-communicable diseases. University students, however, may experience low levels of physical activity because of academic demands, prolonged sitting, extensive use of digital devices, limited recreational facilities, transportation habits, and competing social activities. Physical activity education provides an opportunity to improve students' knowledge of the health benefits of exercise, recommended activity levels, appropriate exercise methods, safety precautions, and practical ways to incorporate physical activity into daily routines. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of physical activity education on exercise practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Theory of Planned Behavior. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of their susceptibility to lifestyle-related diseases, perceived severity, perceived benefits of physical activity, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their exercise practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes self-efficacy, observational learning, behavioural reinforcement, social support, and environmental influences in the adoption and maintenance of physical activity behaviours. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how students' attitudes toward exercise, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control influence their intentions and subsequent exercise practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how physical activity education may influence exercise practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, and eligible students. Physical activity education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to structured physical activity education, knowledge of recommended physical activity levels, information on aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities, benefits of regular exercise, exercise safety, warm-up and cool-down practices, sedentary behaviour reduction, exercise planning, and opportunities for practical demonstrations. Exercise practices will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of exercise, duration of physical activity sessions, intensity of exercise, participation in aerobic activities, muscle-strengthening activities, recreational physical activity, walking or cycling, participation in organized sports, sedentary time, and consistency of exercise routines. Where appropriate, validated physical activity assessment instruments may be used to provide standardized measures of exercise practices. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated physical activity and exercise assessment instruments, activity diaries, and relevant educational programme records. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, exposure to physical activity education, and exercise practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of physical activity education on exercise practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, exercise practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared to determine changes associated with the programme. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that physical activity education has a significant positive effect on exercise practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured physical activity education are expected to demonstrate increased participation in regular exercise, improved understanding of recommended activity levels, greater engagement in aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities, and reduced sedentary behaviour compared with students who receive limited physical activity education. Education may improve students' confidence in engaging in exercise safely and help them identify practical opportunities for physical activity within their academic schedules. Peer support, practical demonstrations, and accessible information may further encourage students to establish consistent exercise routines. However, academic workload, limited recreational facilities, financial constraints, safety concerns, environmental conditions, prolonged screen time, and competing social activities may continue to influence students' exercise practices. The study therefore expects practical, accessible, and contextually appropriate physical activity education to contribute significantly to improved exercise practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on physical activity education, exercise practices, university students, health promotion, sedentary behaviour, physical fitness, non-communicable disease prevention, student wellbeing, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission, universities, student health centres, sports and recreation departments, healthcare professionals, public health educators, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting physical activity among young adults. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating physical activity education into university health promotion programmes, improving access to recreational and exercise facilities, encouraging active transportation and organized physical activities, reducing prolonged sedentary behaviour, strengthening student wellness programmes, and creating supportive university environments that promote regular exercise across Nigeria.
