Effect of Stress Management Education on Stress Management Practices among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Stress is an important concern among university students because of academic workload, examinations, financial pressures, social relationships, adjustment to university life, uncertainty about employment, and other personal and environmental challenges. Prolonged or poorly managed stress may negatively affect students' emotional wellbeing, academic functioning, sleep, social relationships, and general quality of life. Stress management education provides university students with information and practical skills for recognizing stress, identifying common stressors, understanding the effects of prolonged stress, managing academic demands, developing healthy coping strategies, improving time management, practicing relaxation techniques, maintaining healthy sleep and physical activity patterns, seeking appropriate social support, and accessing professional assistance when necessary. Stress management practices refer to the strategies and behaviours students use to prevent, reduce, or cope with stress, including effective time management, relaxation techniques, physical activity, adequate sleep, social support, problem-solving, recreational activities, and appropriate use of counselling or professional support services. Among university students in Nigeria, inadequate stress management practices may be associated with limited knowledge of healthy coping strategies, heavy academic demands, financial pressures, social challenges, poor time management, and limited utilization of available support services. Effective stress management education may improve students' knowledge, self-efficacy, and adoption of healthy stress management practices. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of stress management education on stress management practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. The Health Belief Model provides a framework for understanding students' adoption of stress management practices through perceived susceptibility to stress-related problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of effective stress management, perceived barriers, and cues to action. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, environmental conditions, and coping behaviour in shaping stress management practices. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how stress management education may improve students' knowledge and attitudes and influence their adoption of healthy stress management practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how stress management education may influence stress management practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from undergraduate students in selected Nigerian universities using a structured self-administered questionnaire, stress management knowledge assessment, and stress management practices assessment tool. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select universities, faculties or departments, academic levels, and eligible students. Where feasible, selected student groups or university settings will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Students in the intervention group will receive structured stress management education covering recognition of stress, common academic and personal stressors, effects of prolonged stress, time management, study planning, relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, physical activity, healthy sleep practices, problem-solving, social support, recreational activities, and appropriate use of counselling and professional support services. Stress management practices will be assessed using indicators such as time-management practices, use of relaxation techniques, physical activity, sleep practices, social-support utilization, problem-solving strategies, recreational activities, and appropriate use of counselling or other professional support services. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' sociodemographic characteristics, academic circumstances, previous exposure to stress management education, knowledge levels, and stress management practice scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the effect of stress management education on stress management practices. Where appropriate, stress management practices before and after the intervention will be compared. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instruments, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that stress management education has a significant positive effect on stress management practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured stress management education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of stress, its effects, and healthy coping strategies. Education may encourage students to adopt more effective time-management practices, participate in regular physical activity, use relaxation techniques, maintain healthier sleep routines, seek social support, apply constructive problem-solving strategies, and appropriately utilize university counselling services when necessary. Practical exercises and skills-based education are expected to strengthen students' confidence and ability to apply stress management strategies in their academic and personal lives. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained healthy stress management practices because students may continue to face substantial academic workload, financial difficulties, social pressures, inadequate recreational opportunities, and limited access to counselling and mental-health support services. Consequently, stress management education may be most effective when supported by accessible university counselling services, supportive academic policies, student welfare programmes, recreational facilities, peer-support systems, and a university environment that promotes healthy coping and wellbeing. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on stress management education, student mental health, university health, health promotion, coping practices, mental-health literacy, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, universities, university health centres, counselling units, student affairs departments, public health practitioners, health educators, psychologists, counsellors, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving stress management among university students. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating stress management education into university orientation and health-promotion programmes, strengthening counselling services, promoting practical coping skills, improving student support systems, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and creating supportive academic environments that promote effective stress management practices among Nigerian university students.
