Impact of Adolescent Mental Health Education on Mental Health Help-Seeking Practices among Secondary School Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Adolescent mental health is an important public health concern because mental health difficulties during adolescence can affect educational achievement, social relationships, physical health, and overall well-being. Secondary school students may experience emotional and psychological challenges related to academic pressure, peer relationships, family circumstances, social expectations, bullying, and other life experiences. Early recognition of mental health difficulties and timely access to appropriate support can reduce the potential for problems to become more severe and can promote healthier adolescent development. Mental health help-seeking practices refer to adolescents' willingness and actions to seek assistance from appropriate sources when experiencing emotional, psychological, or behavioural difficulties. Such sources may include parents or caregivers, teachers, school counsellors, healthcare professionals, psychologists, social workers, or other qualified mental health providers. Adolescent mental health education provides students with accurate information about mental health, common mental health difficulties, warning signs, coping strategies, available support services, and when and where to seek professional assistance. In Nigeria, misconceptions about mental health, stigma, limited mental health literacy, concerns about confidentiality, fear of discrimination, inadequate school-based mental health services, and limited awareness of available support may discourage secondary school students from seeking appropriate help. Effective mental health education may improve mental health literacy, reduce misconceptions and stigma, and encourage appropriate help-seeking. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of adolescent mental health education on mental health help-seeking practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model (HBM), Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), and Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The Health Belief Model explains health-related behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding students' decisions to seek mental health support. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, behavioural capabilities, and environmental conditions in shaping help-seeking behaviour. The Theory of Planned Behavior proposes that attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control influence behavioural intentions and subsequent help-seeking actions. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a comprehensive framework for explaining how adolescent mental health education may influence mental health help-seeking practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study adopts a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from students in selected public and private secondary schools in Nigeria using a structured self-administered questionnaire. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, local government areas, schools, classes, and eligible students. Where feasible, selected schools will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Students in the intervention group will receive structured adolescent mental health education covering mental health literacy, common adolescent mental health difficulties, warning signs, healthy coping strategies, stigma and misconceptions, sources of professional and non-professional support, confidentiality, appropriate referral pathways, and circumstances in which professional help should be sought. Mental health help-seeking practices will be assessed using indicators such as willingness to seek help, actual help-seeking from appropriate sources when experiencing mental health concerns, knowledge of available support services, readiness to disclose concerns to trusted adults, and appropriate referral-seeking behaviour. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' sociodemographic characteristics, mental health knowledge, exposure to mental health education, and help-seeking practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple logistic regression analysis, will be employed to determine the impact of mental health education on help-seeking practices. Appropriate diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and the robustness of the findings. The study anticipates that adolescent mental health education will have a significant positive impact on mental health help-seeking practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured mental health education are expected to demonstrate improved mental health literacy, greater recognition of mental health difficulties, reduced misconceptions, and increased willingness to seek appropriate assistance. Education may also improve students' knowledge of available support services and increase their confidence in approaching trusted adults, school counsellors, healthcare professionals, or other qualified sources of help. However, education alone may not guarantee appropriate help-seeking because students may continue to face barriers such as stigma, fear of judgement, concerns about confidentiality, parental attitudes, limited availability of school counsellors, inadequate access to mental health professionals, and financial or geographical barriers to care. Consequently, mental health education is expected to be most effective when integrated with accessible, confidential, adolescent-friendly school and community mental health services. This study is expected to contribute to the literature on adolescent mental health, mental health education, health-seeking behaviour, school health, health promotion, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the impact of adolescent mental health education on mental health help-seeking practices among secondary school students. The findings will provide useful information for the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, state ministries of health and education, school administrators, school counsellors, teachers, healthcare professionals, mental health organizations, community health workers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening adolescent mental health promotion. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating mental health education into school health programmes, strengthening school counselling services, improving referral pathways, reducing mental health stigma, training teachers to recognize warning signs and provide appropriate referrals, and increasing access to confidential and adolescent-friendly mental health services across Nigeria.
