Impact of Anxiety Education on Anxiety Knowledge among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Anxiety is an important mental health concern among university students in Nigeria and may affect academic performance, concentration, social relationships, sleep, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life. University students may experience anxiety in relation to academic demands, examinations, financial difficulties, social pressures, transition to university life, uncertainty about employment, and other personal or environmental challenges. However, anxiety may remain poorly recognized because of limited mental health knowledge, misconceptions about anxiety disorders, stigma, fear of disclosure, and inadequate access to appropriate mental health information and support. Anxiety education provides an opportunity to improve students' understanding of anxiety, including its symptoms, risk factors, warning signs, prevention strategies, appropriate coping approaches, help-seeking, and available mental health services. Improved anxiety knowledge may facilitate early recognition and encourage students experiencing significant anxiety symptoms to seek appropriate assistance. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of anxiety education on anxiety knowledge among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Mental Health Literacy Framework. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of susceptibility to anxiety problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of anxiety education, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their willingness to acquire anxiety-related knowledge and seek appropriate assistance. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of knowledge, self-efficacy, observational learning, peer influence, and environmental factors in shaping students' mental health knowledge and behaviours. The Mental Health Literacy Framework emphasizes the ability to recognize mental health conditions, understand their symptoms and risk factors, identify appropriate prevention strategies, know when and where to seek help, and reduce misconceptions and stigma. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how anxiety education may influence anxiety knowledge among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. Anxiety education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured anxiety education sessions, number and duration of sessions, educational content, teaching methods, use of educational materials, recognition of anxiety symptoms, identification of warning signs, knowledge of risk factors, understanding of anxiety disorders, differentiation between normal anxiety and clinically significant anxiety, information on prevention and coping strategies, help-seeking education, stigma-reduction messages, knowledge of available mental health services, and referral information. Anxiety knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as students' ability to identify common anxiety symptoms, recognize warning signs, distinguish normal anxiety from problematic anxiety, understand risk and protective factors, identify appropriate coping and prevention strategies, recognize when professional assistance may be required, identify available mental health services, and reject common misconceptions about anxiety. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and appropriately validated anxiety knowledge or mental health literacy instruments administered before and after the educational intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, baseline anxiety knowledge, exposure to anxiety education, and post-intervention knowledge levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of anxiety education on anxiety knowledge. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that anxiety education has a significant positive impact on anxiety knowledge among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured anxiety education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of anxiety symptoms, warning signs, risk factors, prevention, appropriate coping strategies, and help-seeking compared with their baseline knowledge or students without similar educational exposure. Anxiety education may help students distinguish normal responses to stress from persistent or excessive anxiety that may require further assessment and support. Improved knowledge may reduce misconceptions and stigma and increase students' confidence in discussing anxiety-related concerns with appropriate support persons or mental health professionals. Educational programmes delivered through lectures, seminars, orientation programmes, student counselling services, digital platforms, peer education, and university health programmes may provide accessible opportunities for increasing anxiety knowledge. Conversely, stigma, cultural misconceptions, limited availability of trained mental health professionals, inadequate educational resources, academic workload, concerns about confidentiality, and limited integration of mental health education into university programmes may reduce the effectiveness of anxiety education. The study therefore expects structured, accessible, culturally appropriate, and sustained anxiety education to contribute significantly to improved anxiety knowledge among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on anxiety education, anxiety knowledge, university students' mental health literacy, mental health promotion, student health, health education, early recognition of anxiety, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Universities Commission, university administrators, student affairs departments, university health services, counselling centres, psychologists, psychiatrists, public health practitioners, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening student mental health literacy. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating anxiety education into university orientation and student health programmes, strengthening university counselling and mental health services, improving access to age-appropriate and culturally relevant educational materials, establishing clear referral pathways, reducing stigma and misconceptions, and promoting early recognition and appropriate support for anxiety among university students across Nigeria.
