Impact of Campus Fitness Programmes on Physical Activity Levels among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Regular physical activity is an important component of healthy living and contributes to cardiovascular fitness, healthy body weight, mental wellbeing, and prevention of non-communicable diseases. University students may experience inadequate physical activity because of academic workload, prolonged sitting, extensive use of digital devices, limited recreational opportunities, transportation habits, and competing social activities. Campus fitness programmes provide opportunities for students to participate in structured physical activities such as fitness classes, sports, walking or running programmes, gym-based activities, recreational exercises, and other organized wellness initiatives within the university environment. However, limited facilities, inadequate funding, low student participation, academic demands, safety concerns, and inconsistent programme implementation may affect the effectiveness of campus fitness programmes in Nigeria. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of campus fitness programmes on physical activity levels among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Social Cognitive Theory, the Social Ecological Model, and the Theory of Planned Behavior. Social Cognitive Theory explains how self-efficacy, observational learning, peer support, behavioural reinforcement, and environmental influences may shape students' participation in physical activity. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the interaction between individual, interpersonal, institutional, community, and environmental factors in influencing physical activity behaviours. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how students' attitudes toward exercise, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control influence their intentions and participation in physical activity. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how campus fitness programmes may influence physical activity levels among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, and eligible students. Campus fitness programmes will be assessed using indicators such as availability of fitness programmes, frequency and duration of activities, fitness classes, sports programmes, walking or running initiatives, gym facilities, recreational activities, availability of trained fitness instructors, accessibility of facilities, programme participation opportunities, student awareness, and institutional support. Physical activity levels will be assessed using indicators such as frequency, duration, and intensity of physical activity, participation in moderate- and vigorous-intensity activities, walking, sports participation, recreational exercise, muscle-strengthening activities, sedentary time, and overall weekly physical activity. Where appropriate, validated physical activity assessment instruments may be used to provide standardized measures of students' activity levels. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated physical activity assessment tools, activity diaries, campus fitness programme attendance records, and relevant university health and recreational programme documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, exposure to campus fitness programmes, participation patterns, and physical activity levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of campus fitness programmes on physical activity levels. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, physical activity levels before and after participation in campus fitness programmes may be compared to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that campus fitness programmes have a significant positive impact on physical activity levels among university students in Nigeria. Students who participate regularly in campus fitness programmes are expected to demonstrate higher levels of moderate- and vigorous-intensity physical activity, greater participation in organized sports and recreational exercise, and reduced sedentary time compared with students without regular access to campus fitness opportunities. Convenient access to fitness facilities and organized activities within the university environment may reduce barriers associated with time, cost, and transportation. Peer participation, group exercise, and supportive campus environments may further improve students' motivation and confidence to engage in regular physical activity. However, academic workload, inadequate facilities, programme costs, safety concerns, limited awareness, weather conditions, and low student motivation may affect participation. The study therefore expects accessible, affordable, inclusive, and consistently implemented campus fitness programmes to contribute significantly to improved physical activity levels among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on campus fitness programmes, physical activity levels, university students, exercise participation, sedentary behaviour, student wellbeing, health promotion, physical fitness, and non-communicable disease prevention in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission, universities, student health centres, sports and recreation departments, public health practitioners, fitness professionals, healthcare providers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting physical activity among young adults. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for expanding campus fitness programmes, improving access to affordable recreational facilities, increasing student awareness and participation, providing structured fitness activities, strengthening university wellness policies, and creating supportive campus environments that encourage regular physical activity across Nigeria.
