Impact of Fertility Tracking Education on Fertility Awareness Practices among Women of Reproductive Age in Nigeria
Abstract
Fertility awareness is an important component of reproductive health that enables women to understand their menstrual cycles, identify periods of increased fertility, recognize variations in cycle patterns, and make informed reproductive-health decisions. Women of reproductive age in Nigeria may have limited knowledge of fertility patterns because of inadequate reproductive-health education, misconceptions about ovulation and fertile periods, irregular menstrual cycles, reliance on informal sources of information, and limited access to reliable fertility counselling. Fertility tracking education provides an opportunity to improve women's understanding of menstrual-cycle patterns and develop practical skills for monitoring fertility-related indicators. Appropriate fertility tracking may support informed decisions regarding conception planning, pregnancy prevention, and timely healthcare-seeking when menstrual or fertility-related concerns arise. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of fertility tracking education on fertility awareness practices among women of reproductive age in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Health Literacy Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory. The Health Belief Model explains how women's perceptions of fertility-related concerns, perceived benefits of fertility awareness, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action may influence their fertility awareness practices. Health Literacy Theory emphasizes women's ability to obtain, understand, evaluate, and apply reliable reproductive-health information when monitoring fertility. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, behavioural modelling, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and environmental influences in developing and maintaining fertility awareness behaviours. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how fertility tracking education may influence fertility awareness practices among women of reproductive age in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise women aged 18–49 years residing in selected urban, semi-urban, and rural communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, households, healthcare facilities, and eligible women. Fertility tracking education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to fertility-awareness education sessions, frequency and duration of education, knowledge of the menstrual cycle, understanding of ovulation, identification of the fertile window, recognition of cycle-related changes, awareness of cervical mucus patterns, basal body temperature monitoring, menstrual-cycle recording, use of fertility-tracking calendars or applications, understanding of factors that may affect cycle patterns, recognition of limitations of fertility-awareness methods, and awareness of appropriate reproductive-health services. Fertility awareness practices will be assessed using indicators such as regular menstrual-cycle tracking, recording of menstrual dates, monitoring of fertility-related signs, identification of possible fertile periods, maintenance of fertility records, appropriate use of fertility-tracking tools, interpretation of cycle information, recognition of irregular or unusual menstrual patterns, appropriate use of fertility awareness for reproductive planning, and timely consultation with qualified healthcare professionals when fertility or menstrual concerns arise. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, fertility-awareness knowledge assessment tools, menstrual and fertility tracking practice scales, fertility-tracking diaries or application records where appropriate and voluntarily provided, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' demographic and reproductive characteristics, menstrual-cycle patterns, fertility-related information sources, fertility awareness levels, and tracking practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of fertility tracking education on fertility awareness practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, fertility awareness practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that fertility tracking education has a significant positive impact on fertility awareness practices among women of reproductive age in Nigeria. Women exposed to structured, evidence-based, culturally appropriate, and practical fertility tracking education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge and more consistent fertility awareness practices than women without comparable exposure. Education may improve women's understanding of menstrual-cycle patterns, ovulation, fertile periods, and fertility-related signs while encouraging regular recording and interpretation of menstrual information. Practical education may also improve women's ability to use fertility calendars, diaries, or appropriate digital tracking tools and recognize when cycle irregularities may require professional assessment. However, irregular menstrual cycles, misconceptions, cultural beliefs, misinformation, limited reproductive-health literacy, inconsistent tracking, restricted access to digital tools, privacy concerns, and limited access to qualified reproductive-health providers may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, non-judgmental, culturally sensitive, and sustained fertility tracking education, supported by appropriate reproductive-health counselling and services, to contribute significantly to improved fertility awareness practices among women of reproductive age in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on fertility awareness, fertility tracking, reproductive health, menstrual-cycle education, preconception health, family planning, women's health, health education, reproductive-health literacy, digital reproductive-health tools, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, state ministries of health, primary healthcare centres, hospitals, reproductive-health clinics, nurses, midwives, gynaecologists, community health workers, women's health organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving fertility awareness among women. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating fertility tracking education into reproductive-health and family-planning services, strengthening menstrual-cycle and fertility education, improving access to reliable fertility-tracking tools, addressing misconceptions and misinformation, improving reproductive-health counselling, strengthening referral systems for women with fertility concerns, and developing sustainable reproductive-health programmes that promote informed fertility awareness practices among women across Nigeria.
