Impact of Infection Prevention Education on Standard Precaution Compliance among Laboratory Workers in Nigeria
Abstract
Infection prevention and control is an essential component of laboratory practice because laboratory workers may be exposed to blood, body fluids, infectious specimens, contaminated materials, and other biological hazards during specimen collection, processing, testing, storage, transportation, and disposal. Compliance with standard precautions is therefore important for reducing occupational exposure and preventing the transmission of infectious agents within laboratory and healthcare environments. Infection prevention education provides laboratory workers with knowledge and practical training on hand hygiene, appropriate use of personal protective equipment, respiratory and cough hygiene, safe specimen handling, sharps safety, environmental cleaning and disinfection, biomedical waste management, prevention of occupational exposure, spill management, and appropriate post-exposure procedures. Standard precaution compliance refers to the extent to which laboratory workers consistently apply recommended infection prevention measures during routine laboratory activities, irrespective of the suspected or confirmed infection status of patients or specimens. In Nigeria, inadequate compliance with standard precautions may be associated with insufficient infection prevention education, limited access to personal protective equipment, inadequate laboratory infrastructure, high workload, insufficient supervision, shortages of infection-control supplies, and weak implementation of safety policies. Effective infection prevention education may improve laboratory workers' knowledge, practical skills, and adherence to standard precautions. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of infection prevention education on standard precaution compliance among laboratory workers in Nigeria. The study is anchored on Social Cognitive Theory, Experiential Learning Theory, and the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, observational learning, workplace influences, and environmental conditions in shaping infection prevention behaviour. Experiential Learning Theory provides a framework for understanding how demonstrations, simulations, practical exercises, and repeated application of infection prevention procedures facilitate the acquisition and retention of safe laboratory practices. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how infection prevention education may improve knowledge and attitudes and translate these improvements into compliance with standard precautions. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how infection prevention education may influence standard precaution compliance among laboratory workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from laboratory workers in selected medical laboratories, hospital laboratories, research laboratories, university laboratories, and other appropriate laboratory settings in Nigeria using a structured questionnaire, infection prevention knowledge assessment, and standardized standard-precaution compliance checklist. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, local government areas, healthcare institutions, laboratories, and eligible laboratory workers. Where feasible, selected laboratory workers or laboratory facilities will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Participants in the intervention group will receive structured infection prevention education through lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, simulation-based training, visual materials, and supervised laboratory safety activities. The education will cover standard precautions, hand hygiene, appropriate use of personal protective equipment, safe specimen collection and handling, sharps safety, prevention of occupational exposure, respiratory hygiene, environmental cleaning and disinfection, laboratory waste management, spill management, and post-exposure procedures. Standard precaution compliance will be assessed using indicators such as appropriate hand hygiene, correct use of personal protective equipment, safe handling of specimens, appropriate sharps disposal, environmental disinfection, safe management of laboratory waste, appropriate spill response, and adherence to occupational exposure prevention procedures. Where feasible, direct observation and practical simulation assessments will complement self-reported compliance to provide more objective evidence of laboratory workers' practices. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' sociodemographic and professional characteristics, previous infection prevention training, infection prevention knowledge, and compliance scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the impact of infection prevention education on standard precaution compliance. Where appropriate, compliance before and after the intervention will be compared. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instruments, inter-rater reliability of observational assessments, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that infection prevention education has a significant positive impact on standard precaution compliance among laboratory workers in Nigeria. Laboratory workers exposed to structured infection prevention education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of infection risks and greater compliance with recommended standard precautions. Education is expected to improve hand hygiene, appropriate use of personal protective equipment, safe specimen handling, sharps safety, laboratory waste management, environmental disinfection, spill management, and occupational exposure prevention. Practical and simulation-based education is expected to be particularly effective because it allows laboratory workers to apply infection prevention principles to realistic laboratory situations and receive immediate feedback. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained compliance because laboratory workers may continue to face barriers such as inadequate personal protective equipment, shortages of hand hygiene supplies, insufficient safety equipment, high workload, inadequate laboratory infrastructure, poor supervision, and inconsistent enforcement of infection prevention policies. Consequently, infection prevention education may be most effective when supported by adequate supplies, functional laboratory safety infrastructure, regular supervision, refresher training, routine compliance monitoring, and strong infection prevention policies. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on infection prevention education, standard precaution compliance, laboratory safety, occupational health, infection prevention and control, medical laboratory practice, health education, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the impact of infection prevention education on laboratory workers' compliance with standard precautions. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, healthcare institutions, medical laboratory departments, professional laboratory bodies, infection prevention and control committees, occupational health practitioners, public health practitioners, health educators, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening laboratory infection prevention. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating infection prevention education into laboratory training and continuing professional development, improving access to personal protective equipment and infection-control supplies, strengthening compliance monitoring, conducting regular competency assessments, enhancing workplace supervision, and promoting sustainable adherence to standard precautions among laboratory workers in Nigeria.
