Impact of Smartphone Use Education on Healthy Smartphone-Use Practices among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Smartphone use has become an integral part of university students' academic, social, and personal activities in Nigeria. Smartphones provide access to educational resources, communication platforms, digital financial services, entertainment, and health information; however, excessive or inappropriate use may contribute to prolonged screen exposure, sedentary behaviour, sleep disruption, reduced concentration, poor study habits, musculoskeletal discomfort, and difficulties maintaining healthy daily routines. University students may also experience challenges related to late-night smartphone use, prolonged social-media engagement, unnecessary notifications, and inappropriate smartphone use during academic activities. Smartphone-use education provides an opportunity to improve students' awareness of healthy digital habits and promote responsible smartphone-use practices. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of smartphone-use education on healthy smartphone-use practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Theory of Planned Behavior. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of the potential health and wellbeing consequences of excessive smartphone use, perceived benefits of healthy use, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action may influence smartphone-use practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, self-regulation, self-efficacy, reinforcement, social influence, and environmental factors in shaping digital-use behaviours. The Theory of Planned Behavior emphasizes attitudes toward smartphone use, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions as determinants of healthy smartphone-use practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how smartphone-use education may influence healthy smartphone-use practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students aged 18 years and above enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible students. Smartphone-use education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, information on healthy screen-time management, digital wellbeing, sleep hygiene, posture and ergonomic practices, eye-care practices, management of notifications, reduction of unnecessary smartphone use, responsible social-media use, study-time management, prevention of smartphone-related distractions, and appropriate use of smartphone settings and digital-wellbeing tools. Healthy smartphone-use practices will be assessed using indicators such as appropriate management of smartphone screen time, avoidance of excessive recreational use, limiting smartphone use before bedtime, maintaining regular sleep routines, taking breaks during prolonged screen use, maintaining appropriate viewing distance and posture, reducing smartphone-related distractions during academic activities, managing notifications, avoiding unnecessary smartphone use while studying, and maintaining a healthy balance between smartphone use and offline activities. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized smartphone-use and digital-wellbeing assessment tools, screen-time records or device-based usage reports where available and ethically appropriate, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, smartphone ownership and usage patterns, duration and purpose of use, common applications, sources of smartphone-use information, education exposure, and healthy smartphone-use practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of smartphone-use education on healthy smartphone-use practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, healthy smartphone-use practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that smartphone-use education has a significant positive impact on healthy smartphone-use practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured, practical, evidence-based, and sustained smartphone-use education are expected to demonstrate healthier digital-use practices than students without comparable exposure. Education may improve students' understanding of the potential effects of excessive smartphone use on sleep, concentration, physical activity, posture, and general wellbeing. It may encourage students to establish appropriate screen-time boundaries, reduce unnecessary smartphone use before bedtime, manage notifications, take regular screen breaks, maintain appropriate posture, and reduce smartphone-related distractions during academic activities. Practical education on digital-wellbeing tools may also help students monitor their usage patterns and establish healthier routines. However, academic requirements, social-media engagement, peer influence, dependence on smartphones for communication and academic activities, entertainment habits, constant connectivity, and limited self-control may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, student-centred, and sustained smartphone-use education, supported by appropriate digital-wellbeing strategies, to contribute significantly to improved healthy smartphone-use practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on smartphone use, digital wellbeing, screen-time management, university student health, sleep hygiene, sedentary behaviour, health education, digital health, ergonomics, health promotion, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, universities, university health centres, student affairs departments, healthcare professionals, public health practitioners, digital-health organizations, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting healthier smartphone use among young adults. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating smartphone-use education into university orientation and health-promotion programmes, strengthening digital-wellbeing education, promoting healthy screen-time management, improving awareness of smartphone-related sleep and ergonomic concerns, encouraging balanced digital and offline activities, and developing sustainable university-based interventions that support healthy smartphone-use practices among students across Nigeria.
