Impact of Tobacco Cessation Education on Tobacco Cessation Knowledge among Young Adults in Nigeria

Abstract

Tobacco use remains an important public health concern in Nigeria, particularly among young adults, and is associated with increased risks of cardiovascular disease, respiratory illnesses, cancer, and other adverse health outcomes. Young adults may be exposed to cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, nicotine-containing products, and other tobacco products through social influences, peer pressure, advertising, accessibility, and established patterns of use. Despite the health risks associated with tobacco use, some young adults may have limited knowledge of tobacco dependence, health consequences, cessation methods, withdrawal symptoms, available cessation services, and effective strategies for overcoming tobacco use. Tobacco cessation education provides an opportunity to improve young adults' understanding of tobacco dependence and evidence-based cessation approaches, including behavioural support, quit planning, management of withdrawal symptoms, identification of triggers, relapse prevention, and appropriate professional assistance. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of tobacco cessation education on tobacco cessation knowledge among young adults in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Transtheoretical Model of Behaviour Change. The Health Belief Model explains how young adults' perceptions of the health risks and severity of tobacco use, perceived benefits of cessation, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their acquisition of tobacco cessation knowledge. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of knowledge, self-efficacy, observational learning, social support, and environmental influences in developing tobacco cessation-related competencies. The Transtheoretical Model explains how individuals may progress through stages of behavioural change, from lack of readiness to cessation and maintenance, and highlights the importance of stage-appropriate education and support. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how tobacco cessation education may influence tobacco cessation knowledge among young adults in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise young adults aged 18–35 years in selected communities, tertiary institutions, workplaces, and other settings across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, communities, institutions, workplaces, and eligible participants. Tobacco cessation education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured cessation education sessions, training frequency and duration, knowledge of tobacco dependence, health consequences of tobacco use, benefits of quitting, quit planning, identification of tobacco-use triggers, management of withdrawal symptoms, behavioural coping strategies, nicotine dependence, pharmacological cessation options, behavioural counselling, nicotine replacement therapy, relapse prevention, available cessation services, professional support, and tobacco control resources. Tobacco cessation knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as understanding the health effects of tobacco use, recognition of nicotine dependence, knowledge of the benefits of quitting, awareness of withdrawal symptoms, knowledge of effective cessation methods, understanding of behavioural support, awareness of nicotine replacement therapy and other appropriate treatment options, knowledge of relapse prevention, awareness of available cessation services, and recognition of situations requiring professional assistance. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and appropriately validated tobacco cessation knowledge instruments administered before and after the educational intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' demographic and tobacco-use characteristics, exposure to tobacco cessation education, and knowledge levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of tobacco cessation education on tobacco cessation knowledge. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that tobacco cessation education has a significant positive impact on tobacco cessation knowledge among young adults in Nigeria. Young adults exposed to structured tobacco cessation education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of tobacco dependence, health consequences, benefits of quitting, withdrawal management, behavioural cessation strategies, available treatment options, relapse prevention, and professional cessation services compared with their baseline knowledge or young adults without similar educational exposure. Education may improve participants' understanding of the challenges associated with quitting and increase awareness of evidence-based approaches for achieving and maintaining tobacco cessation. Interactive approaches involving counselling demonstrations, quit-planning exercises, case scenarios, peer discussions, and practical identification of triggers may strengthen participants' ability to understand and apply tobacco cessation information. However, peer influence, social acceptance of tobacco use, misinformation, accessibility of tobacco products, limited cessation services, concerns about withdrawal symptoms, financial barriers, and inadequate access to trained cessation providers may limit the effectiveness of tobacco cessation education. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, evidence-based, and sustained tobacco cessation education to contribute significantly to improved tobacco cessation knowledge among young adults in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on tobacco cessation education, tobacco cessation knowledge, tobacco control, nicotine dependence, young adult health, health education, behavioural change, preventive healthcare, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, state ministries of health, tertiary institutions, workplaces, primary healthcare facilities, tobacco-control programmes, healthcare professionals, public health practitioners, youth organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening tobacco cessation initiatives. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating tobacco cessation education into youth health programmes, tertiary institutions, workplaces, primary healthcare services, and community health initiatives; expanding access to cessation counselling and support; strengthening public awareness of evidence-based cessation methods; improving referral pathways; and establishing sustainable tobacco cessation education programmes for young adults across Nigeria.
