Impact of Workplace Injury Prevention Education on Occupational Safety Practices among Factory Workers in Nigeria
Abstract
Workplace injuries remain an important occupational and public health concern in Nigeria, particularly within manufacturing and industrial environments where workers may be exposed to machinery, chemicals, electrical equipment, heavy materials, noise, heat, falls, cuts, burns, and other occupational hazards. Factory workers may face increased risks of occupational injuries when safety procedures are inadequately understood, protective equipment is not properly used, machinery is poorly maintained, or workplace hazards are not effectively identified and controlled. Workplace injury prevention education provides workers with information and practical skills relating to hazard identification, safe operation of machinery and equipment, appropriate use of personal protective equipment, emergency procedures, fire prevention, safe material handling, electrical safety, chemical safety, accident reporting, and other occupational safety measures. Occupational safety practices refer to behaviours adopted by workers and organizations to prevent workplace injuries and reduce exposure to occupational hazards, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment, compliance with safety procedures, safe machinery operation, hazard reporting, housekeeping, emergency preparedness, and adherence to workplace safety rules. In Nigeria, inadequate safety education, limited access to protective equipment, production pressures, insufficient workplace supervision, poor safety culture, and inadequate maintenance of equipment may contribute to unsafe practices among factory workers. Effective workplace injury prevention education may improve workers' knowledge, risk perception, safety skills, and compliance with recommended occupational safety practices. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of workplace injury prevention education on occupational safety practices among factory workers in Nigeria. The study is anchored on Social Cognitive Theory, the Health Belief Model, and the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, behavioural capabilities, social influences, and environmental conditions in shaping occupational safety behaviour. The Health Belief Model explains preventive occupational health behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding workers' decisions to adopt safety practices. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how improved knowledge and attitudes resulting from workplace injury prevention education may influence occupational safety practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how workplace injury prevention education may influence occupational safety practices among factory workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from factory workers in selected manufacturing and industrial organizations in Nigeria using a structured self-administered questionnaire and an observational workplace safety checklist. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, industrial areas, factories, departments or production units, and eligible factory workers. Where feasible, selected factories or worker groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Workers in the intervention group will receive structured workplace injury prevention education covering hazard identification, safe machinery operation, appropriate use of personal protective equipment, chemical and electrical safety, fire prevention, safe material handling, housekeeping, emergency response, accident reporting, and prevention of common workplace injuries. Occupational safety practices will be assessed using indicators such as consistent and correct use of personal protective equipment, compliance with safety procedures, safe operation of machinery and equipment, hazard identification and reporting, appropriate housekeeping, safe material handling, emergency preparedness, and adherence to workplace safety rules. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize workers' sociodemographic and occupational characteristics, workplace safety knowledge, exposure to education, and occupational safety practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the impact of workplace injury prevention education on occupational safety practices. Where appropriate, observational safety scores will be compared before and after the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that workplace injury prevention education has a significant positive impact on occupational safety practices among factory workers in Nigeria. Workers exposed to structured injury prevention education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of workplace hazards and greater compliance with recommended safety practices. Education may improve appropriate use of personal protective equipment, safe machinery operation, hazard reporting, housekeeping, emergency preparedness, and adherence to workplace safety procedures. It may also improve workers' ability to recognize occupational hazards and respond appropriately to unsafe conditions. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained occupational safety practices because factory workers may continue to face barriers such as inadequate protective equipment, poorly maintained machinery, production pressures, insufficient supervision, workplace overcrowding, and weak enforcement of safety rules. Consequently, workplace injury prevention education is expected to be most effective when supported by adequate protective equipment, routine workplace safety inspections, machinery maintenance, effective supervision, strong organizational safety policies, and a positive workplace safety culture. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on occupational health, workplace injury prevention, industrial safety, health education, workplace safety behaviour, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the impact of workplace injury prevention education on occupational safety practices among factory workers. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Industrial Safety Council and other relevant occupational safety authorities, manufacturing organizations, employers, labour unions, workplace safety officers, occupational health professionals, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing occupational injuries in Nigerian factories. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening workplace injury prevention education, improving access to personal protective equipment, conducting regular occupational safety training and inspections, strengthening machinery maintenance programmes, improving workplace safety supervision, and promoting a strong safety culture within manufacturing organizations across Nigeria.
