Impact of Workplace Wellness Programmes on Healthy Lifestyle Practices among Office Workers in Nigeria

Abstract

Workplace wellness is an important component of public health because office workers may spend long periods sitting, experience work-related stress, have irregular eating patterns, engage in inadequate physical activity, and develop other lifestyle behaviours that may increase their risk of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and other chronic health conditions. Workplace wellness programmes provide opportunities for employers to promote healthier behaviours through health education, physical activity initiatives, nutrition counselling, health screening, stress-management activities, smoking cessation support, and other preventive health interventions. However, workplace wellness programmes may be limited by inadequate organizational support, financial constraints, demanding work schedules, low employee participation, limited programme awareness, and insufficient workplace health resources in Nigeria. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of workplace wellness programmes on healthy lifestyle practices among office workers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Social Ecological Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Health Belief Model. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the influence of individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and broader environmental factors on employees' health behaviours. Social Cognitive Theory explains how observational learning, self-efficacy, behavioural reinforcement, social support, and workplace environments may influence the adoption and maintenance of healthy lifestyle practices. The Health Belief Model explains how employees' perceptions of their susceptibility to lifestyle-related diseases, perceived severity, perceived benefits of healthy behaviours, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their health practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how workplace wellness programmes may influence healthy lifestyle practices among office workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise office workers employed in selected public and private organizations across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, organizations, departments, and eligible office workers. Workplace wellness programmes will be assessed using indicators such as availability of workplace health education, physical activity programmes, fitness activities, nutrition counselling, health screening, stress-management programmes, smoking cessation support, weight-management initiatives, employee health promotion materials, access to wellness facilities, frequency of wellness activities, and organizational support for participation. Healthy lifestyle practices will be assessed using indicators such as regular physical activity, healthy dietary practices, adequate fruit and vegetable consumption, appropriate weight-management practices, adequate sleep, stress-management practices, limited alcohol consumption, avoidance of tobacco use, routine health checks, and appropriate healthcare-seeking behaviour. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated lifestyle assessment instruments, workplace wellness programme records, employee health records where available, and relevant organizational documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, exposure to workplace wellness programmes, and patterns of healthy lifestyle practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of workplace wellness programmes on healthy lifestyle practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, lifestyle practice scores before and after implementation of workplace wellness programmes may be compared to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that workplace wellness programmes have a significant positive impact on healthy lifestyle practices among office workers in Nigeria. Employees who participate in structured workplace wellness programmes are expected to demonstrate healthier dietary practices, increased physical activity, improved stress-management behaviours, better weight-management practices, and greater utilization of preventive health services than employees without access to such programmes. Workplace-based interventions may reduce some barriers to healthy behaviour by providing health information and opportunities for physical activity, screening, counselling, and peer support within the work environment. Regular health education and screening may also increase employees' awareness of lifestyle-related health risks and encourage early adoption of preventive behaviours. However, heavy workloads, sedentary work environments, limited organizational funding, low employee participation, inadequate wellness facilities, time constraints, and insufficient management support may reduce programme effectiveness. The study therefore expects accessible, comprehensive, and adequately supported workplace wellness programmes to contribute significantly to improved healthy lifestyle practices among office workers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on workplace wellness programmes, healthy lifestyle practices, occupational health promotion, employee wellbeing, non-communicable disease prevention, workplace health, physical activity, nutrition, stress management, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, employers, public and private organizations, occupational health professionals, human resource managers, healthcare providers, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving employee health. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening workplace wellness policies, integrating regular health screening into workplace programmes, providing opportunities for physical activity, improving access to nutrition and stress-management counselling, creating supportive workplace environments, encouraging employee participation, and establishing sustainable workplace health promotion programmes across Nigeria.
