Influence of Alcohol Abuse Education on Alcohol Risk-Reduction Practices among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Alcohol misuse is an important public health concern among young adults and may contribute to injuries, impaired academic performance, risky sexual behaviour, interpersonal problems, mental health difficulties, and other adverse health and social outcomes. University students may be particularly exposed to alcohol-related risks because of peer influence, social activities, academic pressures, experimentation, and increased independence from family supervision. Alcohol abuse education provides students with information about the health and social consequences of harmful alcohol use, patterns of risky drinking, factors associated with alcohol-related harm, strategies for reducing alcohol-related risks, responsible decision-making, refusal skills, coping strategies, and available support services. Alcohol risk-reduction practices refer to behaviours adopted by students to prevent or reduce alcohol-related harm, including avoiding binge drinking, limiting alcohol consumption, refusing alcohol when appropriate, avoiding driving or riding with an impaired driver, avoiding alcohol-related risky situations, using healthy coping strategies, and seeking professional assistance when alcohol use becomes problematic. In Nigeria, limited knowledge, social norms, peer influence, misconceptions about alcohol, stress, availability of alcoholic beverages, and inadequate access to preventive health information may influence alcohol-related behaviours among university students. Effective alcohol abuse education may improve students' knowledge and encourage the adoption of behaviours that reduce alcohol-related risks. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of alcohol abuse education on alcohol risk-reduction practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. The Health Belief Model explains preventive health behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding students' decisions to adopt alcohol risk-reduction practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, behavioural capabilities, and environmental conditions in shaping alcohol-related behaviour. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how improved knowledge and attitudes resulting from alcohol abuse education may influence alcohol risk-reduction practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how alcohol abuse education may influence alcohol risk-reduction practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from undergraduate students in selected universities in Nigeria using a structured anonymous self-administered questionnaire. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, universities, faculties or departments, academic levels, and eligible students. Where feasible, selected student groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Students in the intervention group will receive structured alcohol abuse education covering harmful alcohol use, short- and long-term health consequences, risky drinking patterns, factors associated with alcohol-related harm, peer and social influences, decision-making and refusal skills, healthy coping strategies, alcohol-related injury prevention, avoiding impaired driving, and available counselling and support services. Alcohol risk-reduction practices will be assessed using indicators such as limiting alcohol consumption, avoiding binge drinking, refusing alcohol when appropriate, avoiding drinking in high-risk situations, avoiding driving or riding with an impaired driver, using alternative coping strategies, and seeking professional support when experiencing difficulties related to alcohol use. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' sociodemographic characteristics, alcohol-related knowledge, exposure to education, and risk-reduction practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the influence of alcohol abuse education on alcohol risk-reduction practices. Appropriate diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that alcohol abuse education has a significant positive influence on alcohol risk-reduction practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured alcohol abuse education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of alcohol-related risks and greater adoption of behaviours that reduce alcohol-related harm. Education may improve awareness of harmful drinking patterns, strengthen decision-making and refusal skills, encourage healthier coping strategies, reduce misconceptions about alcohol, and promote safer choices in situations involving alcohol. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained risk-reduction practices because students may continue to face barriers such as peer pressure, social drinking norms, availability of alcoholic beverages, stress, financial and social influences, and limited access to confidential counselling services. Consequently, alcohol abuse education is expected to be most effective when supported by university-based counselling services, peer-led interventions, supportive institutional policies, health promotion programmes, and accessible mental health and substance-use support. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on alcohol-related health education, substance-use prevention, university student health, behavioural health, health promotion, injury prevention, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the influence of alcohol abuse education on alcohol risk-reduction practices among university students. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Universities Commission, university administrations, student health centres, counselling units, public health practitioners, mental health professionals, community health workers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing alcohol-related harm among young adults. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening university alcohol education programmes, improving counselling and support services, promoting peer-based prevention initiatives, addressing harmful social norms surrounding alcohol use, strengthening health communication, and promoting effective alcohol risk-reduction practices among university students across Nigeria.
