Influence of Anxiety Awareness Education on Mental Health Help-Seeking Practices among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Anxiety-related problems are an important mental health and public health concern among university students because academic demands, financial pressures, social relationships, uncertainty about the future, and other challenges associated with university life may contribute to psychological distress and anxiety symptoms. Early recognition of anxiety-related problems and timely access to appropriate professional support can contribute to improved mental health outcomes and prevent the worsening of psychological difficulties. Anxiety awareness education provides students with information about anxiety, common symptoms and warning signs, risk factors, misconceptions, available treatment options, appropriate sources of professional support, and the importance of seeking help when anxiety symptoms interfere with daily functioning. Mental health help-seeking practices refer to actions taken by students to obtain appropriate assistance for mental health concerns, including seeking support from counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists, healthcare professionals, university counselling services, or other appropriate mental health providers. In Nigeria, mental health stigma, limited mental health literacy, misconceptions about psychological problems, concerns about confidentiality, inadequate awareness of available services, financial constraints, and fear of social judgment may discourage university students from seeking professional mental health support. Effective anxiety awareness education may improve students' understanding of anxiety, recognition of symptoms, awareness of available services, and willingness to seek appropriate assistance. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of anxiety awareness education on mental health help-seeking practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. The Health Belief Model explains health-related behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding students' decisions to seek mental health support. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, behavioural capabilities, and environmental conditions in shaping help-seeking behaviour. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how improved knowledge and attitudes resulting from anxiety awareness education may influence mental health help-seeking practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how anxiety awareness education may influence mental health help-seeking practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from university students in selected Nigerian universities using a structured self-administered questionnaire assessing anxiety awareness, mental health literacy, and help-seeking practices. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select universities, faculties or departments, academic levels, and eligible students. Where feasible, selected student groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Students in the intervention group will receive structured anxiety awareness education covering the meaning and types of anxiety, common symptoms and warning signs, factors associated with anxiety, misconceptions about anxiety, appropriate coping and support options, available professional mental health services, confidentiality, when to seek professional help, and appropriate referral pathways. Mental health help-seeking practices will be assessed using indicators such as seeking assistance from university counselling services, psychologists, psychiatrists, medical practitioners, mental health clinics, or other appropriate professional sources when experiencing significant anxiety or other mental health concerns. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' sociodemographic and academic characteristics, anxiety awareness, exposure to education, and help-seeking practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the influence of anxiety awareness education on mental health help-seeking practices. Where appropriate, pre-intervention and post-intervention help-seeking measures will be compared. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that anxiety awareness education has a significant positive influence on mental health help-seeking practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured anxiety awareness education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of anxiety symptoms and greater awareness of available mental health services. Education may increase students' recognition of when professional assistance is necessary, reduce misconceptions about anxiety, improve awareness of appropriate sources of support, and encourage timely use of professional mental health services. However, education alone may not completely overcome barriers to help-seeking because students may continue to experience stigma, concerns about confidentiality, fear of discrimination, financial constraints, limited availability of mental health professionals, long waiting periods, and cultural misconceptions about mental health treatment. Consequently, anxiety awareness education is expected to be most effective when supported by accessible and confidential university counselling services, affordable mental health care, effective referral systems, mental health awareness campaigns, and supportive campus environments. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on anxiety awareness, mental health literacy, mental health help-seeking, student health, health education, mental health promotion, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the influence of anxiety awareness education on mental health help-seeking practices among university students. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Universities Commission, university management authorities, student affairs divisions, university counselling centres, mental health professionals, public health practitioners, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving mental health help-seeking among university students. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening anxiety awareness education, integrating mental health literacy into university health programmes, improving access to confidential counselling services, strengthening referral pathways, reducing mental health stigma, and promoting timely professional help-seeking among university students in Nigeria.
