Influence of Occupational Safety Practices on Workplace Injuries among Healthcare Workers in Nigeria

Abstract

Occupational safety is an important component of healthcare delivery because healthcare workers are exposed to numerous hazards that may result in workplace injuries, infections, and other occupational health problems. Occupational safety practices refer to measures adopted to prevent or reduce workplace hazards, including the use of personal protective equipment, safe handling and disposal of sharps, infection prevention and control procedures, proper handling of chemicals and hazardous substances, safe patient handling techniques, workplace safety training, incident reporting, and compliance with established occupational health and safety guidelines. Workplace injuries among healthcare workers may include needlestick injuries, cuts, falls, burns, musculoskeletal injuries, exposure to hazardous substances, and other injuries sustained while performing professional duties. In Nigeria, healthcare workers operate in environments where occupational risks may be intensified by inadequate staffing, insufficient protective equipment, overcrowding, poor infrastructure, limited safety training, high workload, and inconsistent enforcement of occupational health and safety standards. These conditions may increase healthcare workers' exposure to preventable workplace hazards. Effective occupational safety practices are therefore essential for protecting healthcare workers, maintaining a safe working environment, and improving the quality and continuity of healthcare delivery. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of occupational safety practices on workplace injuries among healthcare workers in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Hierarchy of Controls Theory, Safety Climate Theory, and Social Ecological Model. The Hierarchy of Controls Theory explains occupational injury prevention through the systematic elimination or reduction of workplace hazards, prioritizing elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment. Safety Climate Theory emphasizes the influence of organizational commitment, management practices, employee perceptions, communication, and safety policies on workplace safety behaviours and outcomes. The Social Ecological Model recognizes that occupational safety and injury prevention are influenced by interacting individual, organizational, environmental, and policy-level factors. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a comprehensive framework for explaining how occupational safety practices may influence workplace injuries among healthcare workers in Nigeria. The study adopts a quantitative cross-sectional research design. Primary data will be collected from healthcare workers employed in selected public and private healthcare facilities in Nigeria using a structured self-administered questionnaire and, where feasible, a workplace safety observation checklist. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, local government areas, healthcare facilities, departments, and eligible healthcare workers. Occupational safety practices will be measured using availability and use of personal protective equipment, hand hygiene practices, sharps safety, infection prevention and control measures, safe handling of hazardous substances, workplace safety training, availability of safety guidelines, incident reporting systems, vaccination and occupational health services, and compliance with safety procedures. Workplace injuries will be assessed using the occurrence and frequency of needlestick injuries, cuts, falls, burns, musculoskeletal injuries, chemical exposures, and other occupational injuries experienced within a specified period. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize respondents' sociodemographic and professional characteristics, levels of occupational safety practices, and workplace injury patterns. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple logistic or regression analysis, will be employed to determine the influence of occupational safety practices on workplace injuries. Appropriate diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess multicollinearity, model specification, goodness of fit, and the robustness of the estimated relationships. The study anticipates that effective occupational safety practices will have a significant negative influence on workplace injuries among healthcare workers in Nigeria. Healthcare workers who consistently use appropriate personal protective equipment, follow sharps safety procedures, comply with infection prevention guidelines, participate in occupational safety training, and report workplace hazards are expected to experience fewer preventable workplace injuries. Adequate safety equipment, clear workplace safety policies, effective supervision, and accessible occupational health services are also expected to contribute to a safer working environment. Conversely, inadequate protective equipment, poor safety training, excessive workload, unsafe disposal of sharps, weak incident-reporting systems, and poor compliance with safety procedures may increase healthcare workers' exposure to workplace hazards and injuries. However, the effectiveness of occupational safety practices may also depend on organizational commitment, availability of resources, staffing levels, workplace infrastructure, management support, and enforcement of safety policies. Consequently, reducing workplace injuries requires not only individual compliance but also strong institutional safety systems and supportive working environments. This study is expected to make significant contributions to the literature on occupational health, workplace safety, healthcare worker protection, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the relationship between occupational safety practices and workplace injuries among healthcare workers. The findings will provide useful information for the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, state ministries of health, healthcare facility managers, occupational health practitioners, infection prevention and control committees, professional healthcare associations, labour organizations, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing occupational injuries. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for improving the availability and use of personal protective equipment, strengthening occupational safety training, improving sharps management, establishing effective injury reporting systems, strengthening workplace safety monitoring, improving occupational health services, and enforcing appropriate occupational safety standards across Nigerian healthcare facilities.
