Influence of Stress Management Education on Stress-Management Practices among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Stress is an important public health concern among university students and may arise from academic demands, financial difficulties, interpersonal relationships, adjustment to university life, uncertainty about employment, and other social and environmental pressures. Persistent or poorly managed stress may negatively affect students' psychological well-being, sleep, academic performance, social relationships, and overall quality of life. Stress management education provides students with information and practical skills for identifying sources and signs of stress, developing healthy coping strategies, managing time and academic demands, engaging in physical activity and relaxation techniques, maintaining healthy sleep and dietary habits, building supportive relationships, and seeking appropriate professional assistance when necessary. Stress-management practices refer to behaviours adopted by students to prevent, reduce, or cope effectively with stress, including relaxation exercises, physical activity, effective time management, adequate sleep, social support, healthy coping strategies, and appropriate use of counselling or mental health services. In Nigeria, university students may experience substantial academic, financial, social, and environmental pressures, while limited awareness and inadequate access to mental health and counselling services may constrain effective stress management. Effective stress management education may improve students' knowledge, coping skills, self-efficacy, and adoption of healthier stress-management practices. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of stress management education on stress-management practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. The Health Belief Model explains health-related behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding students' adoption of stress-management practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, behavioural capabilities, and environmental conditions in shaping coping and health behaviours. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how improved knowledge and attitudes resulting from stress management education may influence students' stress-management practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how stress management education may influence stress-management practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from undergraduate students in selected universities in Nigeria using a structured self-administered questionnaire and an appropriate validated stress-management practices assessment instrument. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, universities, faculties or departments, academic levels, and eligible students. Where feasible, selected student groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Students in the intervention group will receive structured stress management education covering the causes and effects of stress, recognition of stress symptoms, healthy coping strategies, time management, study planning, relaxation and breathing techniques, physical activity, sleep hygiene, healthy social support, problem-solving, emotional regulation, and appropriate use of counselling and mental health services. Stress-management practices will be assessed using indicators such as use of healthy coping strategies, time management, relaxation activities, physical activity, adequate sleep, social support, avoidance of harmful coping behaviours, and utilization of appropriate counselling or mental health services when necessary. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' sociodemographic characteristics, stress-related knowledge, exposure to education, and stress-management practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the influence of stress management education on stress-management practices. Appropriate diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that stress management education has a significant positive influence on stress-management practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured stress management education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of stress and greater adoption of healthy practices for managing academic and everyday pressures. Education may strengthen students' ability to identify stress early, improve time-management and coping skills, encourage relaxation and physical activity, promote healthier sleep patterns, and increase awareness of appropriate counselling and mental health services. However, education alone may not eliminate the sources of stress experienced by students because academic workload, financial difficulties, relationship problems, institutional pressures, and other environmental factors may persist. Consequently, stress management education is expected to be most effective when supported by accessible university counselling services, supportive academic environments, student welfare programmes, recreational opportunities, mental health promotion initiatives, and institutional measures that address major sources of student stress. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on stress management, university student health, mental health promotion, health education, behavioural health, psychological well-being, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the influence of stress management education on stress-management practices among university students. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Universities Commission, university administrations, student health centres, counselling units, mental health professionals, public health practitioners, student affairs departments, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving students' ability to manage stress. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating stress management education into university health programmes, strengthening counselling and mental health services, promoting healthy coping strategies, improving student support systems, providing stress-reduction resources, and creating supportive academic environments that promote the psychological well-being of university students across Nigeria.
