Effect of Academic Peer Review Activities on Accounting Students’ Ability to Critically Evaluate Research Work in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Academic peer review activities refer to structured learning practices in which students examine, assess, and provide constructive feedback on the research work of their peers. Accounting students need critical evaluation skills to determine the quality, relevance, accuracy, and credibility of research work, particularly as research competence is increasingly important in accounting education and professional practice. However, many students experience difficulties in identifying weaknesses in research arguments, assessing the quality of evidence, and distinguishing well-supported conclusions from unsupported claims. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of academic peer review activities on accounting students’ ability to critically evaluate research work in Nigerian universities. Academic peer review activities involve students systematically reviewing research papers, proposals, assignments, and other academic work produced by their classmates. The process may require students to examine research objectives, problem statements, literature reviews, methodologies, data presentation, analysis, findings, and conclusions. Through guided review activities, students are exposed to opportunities to identify errors, assess the strength of arguments, provide constructive comments, and justify their judgments. Regular participation in peer review can encourage active engagement with research materials and provide students with practical experience in evaluating academic work. Accounting students’ ability to critically evaluate research work involves their capacity to examine research materials carefully, identify strengths and weaknesses, assess the appropriateness of research methods, evaluate evidence, recognize inconsistencies, and determine whether conclusions are adequately supported. Academic peer review activities may strengthen this ability by requiring students to move beyond passive reading and actively assess the quality of another person’s work. By comparing research work against established academic criteria, students may develop greater analytical judgment, attention to detail, and confidence in evaluating research arguments. The study will adopt a quantitative research design, specifically an appropriate quasi-experimental or survey-based approach depending on the selected study setting. The population will comprise accounting education or accounting students in selected Nigerian universities. A suitable sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ participation in academic peer review activities and their ability to critically evaluate research work. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the appropriate statistical test used to determine the effect of academic peer review activities on students’ critical evaluation ability. The study is expected to establish that academic peer review activities have a positive effect on accounting students’ ability to critically evaluate research work. Students who regularly participate in structured peer review may demonstrate stronger abilities to identify weaknesses in research arguments, assess the relevance of evidence, evaluate research procedures, detect inconsistencies, and judge the appropriateness of research conclusions. The findings are also expected to indicate that active involvement in reviewing the work of others can improve students’ analytical engagement with academic research. The study will have important implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting lecturers may use peer review activities to create more interactive research-learning environments in which students actively examine and discuss research work. Structured peer review can complement conventional lectures by giving students opportunities to apply research evaluation criteria to practical academic materials. It may also encourage students to develop analytical reasoning, constructive feedback skills, academic judgment, and greater awareness of the standards expected in quality research work. The findings will be beneficial to accounting students, accounting lecturers, university departments, curriculum planners, and institutions responsible for accounting education. Students may benefit from improved research evaluation and analytical skills, while lecturers may gain an additional instructional strategy for developing research competence. Accounting departments may use the findings to strengthen research-related learning activities, and curriculum planners may consider incorporating structured peer review into accounting research courses and project preparation. The study may also contribute to discussions on improving the quality of research training among accounting students. The study recommends that accounting departments in Nigerian universities incorporate structured academic peer review activities into relevant accounting research and project-based courses. Lecturers should provide clear evaluation criteria, appropriate research materials, and constructive feedback guidelines to ensure that peer review activities are meaningful and academically focused. Students should be encouraged to participate actively and responsibly in reviewing their peers’ research work. The study concludes that well-structured academic peer review activities can provide accounting students with valuable opportunities to develop the critical evaluation skills required for effective academic research and professional practice.
