Influence of Digital Accounting Software Training on the Employability Skills of Accounting Students in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

The increasing digitalization of accounting practice has created growing demand for accounting graduates who possess practical competencies in accounting information systems and digital accounting technologies. Employers increasingly expect accounting graduates to demonstrate not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills in computerized accounting, financial data processing, digital reporting, spreadsheet applications, accounting software, and technology-assisted decision-making. However, accounting students in some Nigerian universities may have limited opportunities to receive practical training with contemporary digital accounting software, creating a gap between university-based accounting education and workplace requirements. Digital accounting software training provides an opportunity to strengthen students' practical accounting competencies and improve their readiness for employment. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of digital accounting software training on the employability skills of accounting students in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Human Capital Theory, Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), and Social Cognitive Theory. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in education and practical skills development can improve individuals' productivity, competencies, and employment prospects. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use may influence students' adoption and effective utilization of digital accounting software. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, practical experience, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and interaction with the learning environment in developing students' confidence and technological competencies. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how digital accounting software training may influence the employability skills of accounting students in Nigerian universities. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate accounting students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting students. Digital accounting software training will be assessed using indicators such as frequency and duration of software training, availability of practical accounting laboratories, exposure to computerized accounting systems, training on accounting packages, spreadsheet applications, cloud-based accounting software, computerized bookkeeping, financial statement preparation, payroll processing, inventory management, tax-related accounting applications, digital financial reporting, data entry and processing, software troubleshooting, and practical software assignments. Employability skills will be assessed using indicators such as computerized accounting competence, digital literacy, financial data-processing skills, spreadsheet proficiency, problem-solving ability, analytical skills, accuracy in accounting tasks, communication skills, teamwork, adaptability, time management, technological confidence, and workplace readiness. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, digital accounting software competency assessment tools, practical performance tests, employability-skills assessment instruments, and students' academic or practical training records where ethically accessible. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to digital accounting software training, types of software used, level of practical experience, and employability skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the influence of digital accounting software training on employability skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, employability-skill scores before and after software training may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that digital accounting software training has a significant positive influence on the employability skills of accounting students in Nigerian universities. Students who receive structured, practical, and industry-relevant training are expected to demonstrate stronger digital accounting competencies, spreadsheet proficiency, financial data-processing skills, problem-solving ability, analytical skills, technological confidence, and workplace readiness than students with limited practical exposure. Practical software training may also help students bridge the gap between theoretical accounting knowledge and real-world accounting practice by allowing them to perform computerized bookkeeping, financial reporting, payroll, inventory, and other accounting-related tasks. Exposure to digital accounting environments may improve students' adaptability to technology-driven workplaces and increase their confidence in performing entry-level accounting responsibilities. However, inadequate computer facilities, limited software access, outdated training programmes, insufficiently trained lecturers, unreliable electricity and internet connectivity, and weak collaboration between universities and industry may reduce the effectiveness of digital accounting software training. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, industry-relevant, and regularly updated digital accounting software training to contribute significantly to improved employability skills among accounting students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on accounting education, digital accounting, accounting information systems, employability skills, digital literacy, computerized accounting, educational technology, workplace readiness, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, faculties of management sciences, accounting departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, employers, curriculum developers, educational technology providers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening technology-oriented accounting education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating contemporary digital accounting software into accounting curricula, improving accounting laboratories and computer facilities, strengthening practical software training, enhancing lecturer capacity in digital accounting technologies, promoting university-industry collaboration, and ensuring that accounting graduates possess relevant technological and professional competencies required for employment in Nigeria's increasingly digital accounting environment.
