Effect of Climate-Related Financial Reporting Education on Sustainability Reporting Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Climate change has increasingly become an important concern for businesses, investors, regulators, and other stakeholders because of its potential effects on business operations, financial performance, asset values, risk exposure, and long-term corporate sustainability. These developments have increased the importance of climate-related financial reporting and sustainability reporting within accounting education and professional practice. Accounting education students require appropriate knowledge and practical skills to identify, measure, communicate, and disclose climate-related financial risks, opportunities, emissions information, sustainability performance, and other environmental matters in accordance with relevant reporting frameworks and standards. However, accounting education programmes in Nigeria may provide limited exposure to climate-related financial reporting and sustainability reporting practices, potentially creating competency gaps among future accounting educators and professionals. Climate-related financial reporting education provides an opportunity to strengthen students' understanding of environmental and climate-related disclosures and develop their ability to prepare and interpret sustainability information. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of climate-related financial reporting education on sustainability reporting skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Human Capital Theory, Stakeholder Theory, and Constructivist Learning Theory. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in specialized education and skills can improve students' knowledge, professional competencies, productivity, and employability. Stakeholder Theory emphasizes the importance of providing relevant and transparent sustainability information to stakeholders who are affected by organizational activities and require information for decision-making. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, practical application, problem-solving, and knowledge construction through meaningful learning experiences, providing a basis for examining how climate-related financial reporting education may develop students' sustainability reporting skills. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how climate-related financial reporting education may influence sustainability reporting skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate accounting education students enrolled in selected universities and institutions offering accounting education programmes in Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities or institutions, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting education students. Climate-related financial reporting education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to climate-related reporting courses or modules, frequency and duration of instruction, climate-related financial risks and opportunities, greenhouse-gas emissions reporting, environmental performance indicators, climate-risk assessment, climate-related financial disclosures, sustainability standards, sustainability reporting frameworks, materiality assessment, scenario analysis, environmental accounting, practical reporting exercises, case studies, sustainability reports, and use of digital reporting resources. Sustainability reporting skills will be assessed using indicators such as identification of relevant sustainability information, preparation of sustainability disclosures, climate-risk reporting, environmental performance measurement, greenhouse-gas emissions disclosure, materiality assessment, data collection and verification, interpretation of sustainability information, integration of financial and non-financial information, sustainability report preparation, critical evaluation of corporate sustainability reports, and communication of sustainability information to stakeholders. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized sustainability-reporting skills assessment tools, climate-reporting knowledge tests, practical case studies, sustainability-report preparation exercises, analysis of corporate sustainability reports, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to climate-related financial reporting education, learning resources, reporting knowledge, and sustainability reporting skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of climate-related financial reporting education on sustainability reporting skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, sustainability reporting skill scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that climate-related financial reporting education has a significant positive effect on sustainability reporting skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured, practical, and current climate-related financial reporting education are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities in identifying climate-related financial information, assessing material sustainability issues, preparing environmental and climate disclosures, interpreting greenhouse-gas emissions information, analysing climate-related risks and opportunities, and preparing sustainability reports than students with limited exposure. Practical case studies and reporting exercises may help students connect theoretical reporting principles with real-world corporate sustainability disclosures. Exposure to current sustainability reporting frameworks and corporate reports may also strengthen students' ability to evaluate the completeness, relevance, comparability, and reliability of sustainability information. However, limited access to current reporting standards, inadequate lecturer expertise, curriculum gaps, limited practical datasets, insufficient digital resources, and low institutional emphasis on sustainability reporting may reduce the effectiveness of climate-related financial reporting education. The study therefore expects current, practical, interdisciplinary, and industry-relevant climate-related financial reporting education to contribute significantly to improved sustainability reporting skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on climate-related financial reporting education, sustainability reporting, accounting education, environmental accounting, climate-risk disclosure, sustainability accounting, corporate reporting, financial reporting education, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, faculties of education and management sciences, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, financial reporting regulators, sustainability professionals, curriculum developers, employers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening sustainability reporting competencies among future accounting educators and professionals. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating climate-related financial reporting into accounting education curricula, updating teaching materials and reporting resources, strengthening lecturers' capacity in sustainability and climate-related reporting, incorporating practical sustainability-reporting exercises into accounting courses, promoting university-industry collaboration, and ensuring that accounting education graduates possess the sustainability reporting skills required in Nigeria's evolving corporate reporting environment.
