Impact of Digital Banking Accounting Education on Financial Transaction-Recording Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital banking has transformed the way financial transactions are initiated, processed, documented, and recorded, creating new demands for accounting professionals who can accurately manage technology-generated financial information. Digital banking services, including internet banking, mobile banking, electronic funds transfers, automated teller machines, point-of-sale transactions, digital wallets, and other electronic banking platforms, generate large volumes of financial transaction data that require proper identification, classification, recording, reconciliation, and reporting. Accounting education students in Nigeria therefore require adequate knowledge of digital banking and its accounting implications to develop the competencies needed for contemporary accounting practice. However, limited exposure to digital banking accounting concepts, inadequate practical training, insufficient access to digital banking simulation platforms, and gaps in students' understanding of technology-generated financial records may affect their ability to accurately record digital financial transactions. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of digital banking accounting education on financial transaction-recording skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Human Capital Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Human Capital Theory explains how investment in specialized accounting and digital banking education can improve students' knowledge, professional competencies, productivity, and employability. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, practical application, problem-solving, and knowledge construction through meaningful learning experiences, providing a basis for examining how practical digital banking accounting education may develop students' transaction-recording skills. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how students' perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of digital banking technologies may influence their willingness to learn and apply technology-based accounting procedures. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how digital banking accounting education may influence financial transaction-recording skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting education students. Digital banking accounting education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to digital banking accounting instruction, frequency and duration of training, internet banking, mobile banking, electronic funds transfers, automated teller machine transactions, point-of-sale transactions, digital wallets, electronic payment records, bank transaction notifications, electronic statements, transaction verification, bank reconciliation, electronic audit trails, digital banking controls, transaction security, practical demonstrations, case studies, and digital banking simulations. Financial transaction-recording skills will be assessed using indicators such as identification of financial transactions, classification of digital banking transactions, journal entry preparation, recording of electronic receipts and payments, recognition of bank charges and transaction fees, treatment of electronic transfers, recording of point-of-sale transactions, bank reconciliation, identification and correction of transaction errors, maintenance of supporting documentation, verification of transaction records, preparation of accounting records, and application of appropriate accounting principles to digital banking transactions. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized financial transaction-recording skills assessment tools, practical accounting exercises, transaction-recording tasks, bank reconciliation exercises, scenario-based questions, case studies, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to digital banking education, experience with digital financial services, and levels of financial transaction-recording skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of digital banking accounting education on financial transaction-recording skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, financial transaction-recording skill scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that digital banking accounting education has a significant positive impact on financial transaction-recording skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured, practical, and technology-supported digital banking accounting education are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to identify, classify, record, verify, and reconcile electronically generated financial transactions than students with limited exposure. Practical simulations may help students understand how digital banking activities generate accounting records and how electronic transaction information can be transferred accurately into accounting systems. Exercises involving mobile banking transfers, bank charges, electronic receipts, point-of-sale transactions, and bank statements may strengthen students' ability to prepare appropriate accounting entries and identify transaction errors. Digital banking accounting education may also improve students' understanding of electronic documentation, transaction verification, internal controls, and digital audit trails. However, inadequate access to digital banking simulation platforms, unreliable electricity and internet connectivity, limited computer facilities, insufficiently trained lecturers, rapidly changing banking technologies, and limited practical exposure may constrain effective learning. The study therefore expects accessible, current, practical, and professionally relevant digital banking accounting education to contribute significantly to improved financial transaction-recording skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on digital banking accounting education, financial transaction-recording skills, accounting education, digital banking, electronic financial transactions, accounting information systems, fintech education, digital accounting, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, faculties of education and management sciences, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, commercial banks, financial technology organizations, curriculum developers, employers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening digital accounting competencies among future accounting educators and professionals. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating digital banking accounting into accounting education curricula, improving access to digital banking simulation platforms, strengthening lecturers' competencies in digital banking technologies, incorporating practical electronic transaction-recording and bank reconciliation exercises into accounting courses, promoting university-industry collaboration, and preparing accounting education students for accurate and effective financial transaction recording within Nigeria's increasingly digital banking environment.
