Effect of Cloud Accounting Education on the Practical Accounting Skills of Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

The increasing adoption of cloud-based technologies has transformed accounting practice by enabling organizations to access accounting information, process transactions, prepare financial reports, manage records, and collaborate in real time through internet-enabled platforms. Cloud accounting systems provide opportunities for automated bookkeeping, real-time financial reporting, remote access to accounting data, collaborative accounting work, digital document management, and integration with other business applications. As the accounting profession becomes increasingly technology-driven, accounting education students in Nigeria require practical knowledge and skills in cloud-based accounting systems to prepare for contemporary professional practice. However, limited exposure to cloud accounting technologies, inadequate practical training, insufficient internet access, and limited availability of cloud-based accounting resources may constrain students' development of relevant practical competencies. Cloud accounting education provides an opportunity to bridge the gap between theoretical accounting knowledge and technology-based accounting practice. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of cloud accounting education on the practical accounting skills of accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Human Capital Theory, Experiential Learning Theory, and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Human Capital Theory explains how investment in education and technological skills can improve students' competencies, productivity, employability, and future professional performance. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, practical application, reflection, and problem-solving, providing a basis for examining how hands-on cloud accounting education may develop students' practical accounting abilities. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how students' perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of cloud accounting platforms may influence their willingness to adopt and effectively use cloud-based accounting technologies. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how cloud accounting education may influence the practical accounting skills of accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate accounting education students enrolled in selected universities and institutions offering accounting education programmes in Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities or institutions, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting education students. Cloud accounting education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to cloud accounting courses or practical sessions, frequency and duration of training, use of cloud-based accounting platforms, computerized bookkeeping, transaction recording, accounts receivable and payable management, bank reconciliation, payroll processing, inventory management, preparation of financial statements, real-time financial reporting, digital document management, collaborative accounting, data backup, cloud security, user access controls, and integration of accounting systems with other digital applications. Practical accounting skills will be assessed using indicators such as transaction recording, double-entry bookkeeping, ledger management, bank reconciliation, preparation of trial balances, financial statement preparation, accounts receivable and payable management, payroll accounting, inventory accounting, error identification and correction, financial data processing, accounting software operation, financial analysis, problem-solving, accuracy, and ability to perform accounting tasks independently. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, cloud accounting knowledge tests, practical accounting performance assessments, software-based accounting tasks, case studies, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to cloud accounting education, practical training experiences, types of cloud accounting technologies used, and practical accounting skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of cloud accounting education on practical accounting skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, practical accounting skill scores before and after the cloud accounting educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that cloud accounting education has a significant positive effect on the practical accounting skills of accounting education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured, practical, and industry-relevant cloud accounting education are expected to demonstrate stronger competencies in transaction recording, bookkeeping, financial reporting, bank reconciliation, payroll, inventory management, accounts receivable and payable management, financial data processing, and accounting software operation than students with limited exposure. Practical use of cloud accounting platforms may help students understand how accounting transactions are processed within integrated digital environments and improve their ability to perform accounting tasks efficiently and accurately. Cloud-based collaborative activities may also strengthen students' teamwork, communication, digital documentation, and ability to work with accounting information remotely. However, unreliable internet connectivity, inadequate access to computers and cloud platforms, electricity challenges, limited institutional funding, insufficiently trained lecturers, cybersecurity concerns, and inadequate practical accounting laboratories may reduce the effectiveness of cloud accounting education. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, well-supervised, and industry-relevant cloud accounting education to contribute significantly to improved practical accounting skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on cloud accounting education, practical accounting skills, accounting education, accounting information systems, computerized accounting, digital accounting, educational technology, accounting software training, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, faculties of education and management sciences, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, employers, educational technology providers, curriculum developers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening technology-based accounting education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating cloud accounting platforms into accounting education curricula, improving access to internet-enabled accounting laboratories, strengthening lecturers' competencies in cloud accounting technologies, increasing practical software training, incorporating cloud-based accounting case studies and simulations into teaching, strengthening university-industry partnerships, and ensuring that accounting education students acquire the practical accounting competencies required for effective performance in Nigeria's increasingly digital accounting environment.
