Effect of Accounting Career Counselling on Students’ Knowledge of Professional Accounting Pathways in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Accounting career counselling refers to the provision of structured guidance and information that helps students understand accounting-related career options, professional requirements, qualifications, and pathways, while knowledge of professional accounting pathways represents students’ understanding of the different routes available for developing careers in the accounting profession. Effective career counselling is important because accounting students may have limited knowledge of professional qualifications, areas of specialization, certification requirements, and career opportunities available within the accounting field. Inadequate career information may make it difficult for students to make informed decisions about their professional development. This study therefore examines the effect of accounting career counselling on students’ knowledge of professional accounting pathways in Nigerian universities. Accounting career counselling involves activities such as career guidance sessions, professional orientation programmes, discussions with practicing accountants, information on professional examinations, career seminars, mentorship, and provision of information about different accounting specializations. Through these activities, students can learn about professional accounting qualifications, certification processes, employment opportunities, areas such as auditing, taxation, financial reporting, management accounting, forensic accounting, and other career options. Regular counselling can also expose students to the educational and professional requirements associated with different accounting career pathways. Knowledge of professional accounting pathways involves students’ ability to identify, describe, and distinguish the various routes through which they can develop professional careers in accounting. This includes understanding relevant qualifications, professional examinations, specialization areas, practical experience requirements, career progression opportunities, and professional responsibilities. Accounting career counselling can improve this knowledge by providing students with accurate and organized information about professional opportunities and requirements. Better knowledge of these pathways may enable students to make more informed academic and career decisions. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to accounting career counselling and their knowledge of professional accounting pathways. The data collected will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at an appropriate level of significance. The study is expected to establish that accounting career counselling has a significant positive effect on students’ knowledge of professional accounting pathways. Students who receive structured and relevant career counselling are expected to demonstrate greater awareness of professional qualifications, specialization areas, certification requirements, career opportunities, and progression routes within accounting. The findings may also indicate that regular access to career information helps students develop a clearer understanding of the relationship between their academic programme and future professional opportunities. The findings will have important implications for the teaching and learning of accounting education. Integrating career counselling into accounting education may help students connect classroom learning with their long-term professional goals. Lecturers and counsellors can provide students with updated information about professional accounting developments, qualification requirements, employment opportunities, and emerging areas of accounting practice. This approach may encourage students to plan their professional development more deliberately while still in the university. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, lecturers, university career counsellors, university administrators, professional accounting bodies, accounting practitioners, curriculum developers, and educational policymakers. Students may gain clearer knowledge of professional accounting opportunities and make better-informed career decisions, while lecturers and counsellors may gain insight into areas where students require additional career information. Professional accounting organizations may also benefit from improved awareness of professional pathways among prospective accounting professionals. The study recommends that Nigerian universities should strengthen accounting career counselling through regular career guidance programmes, professional orientation sessions, mentorship activities, career seminars, and interactions between students and practicing accountants. Career counsellors and accounting lecturers should provide students with current information about professional qualifications, specialization areas, certification requirements, and career progression opportunities. The study concludes that effective accounting career counselling can significantly improve students’ knowledge of professional accounting pathways and support more informed career planning among accounting education students.
