Effect of Accounting Education on Students’ Knowledge of Business Valuation in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Business valuation is an important area of accounting and financial decision-making that enables individuals and organizations to determine the economic value of a business for purposes such as investment decisions, business acquisition, mergers, succession planning, financial reporting, taxation, restructuring, and strategic management. Accounting Education provides students with theoretical knowledge and practical understanding of financial statements, financial analysis, investment appraisal, business performance, and other concepts that may support their understanding of business valuation. However, students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited exposure to business valuation concepts and practical valuation techniques, which may affect their ability to understand and apply valuation principles in real-world business situations. Effective Accounting Education may therefore strengthen students’ knowledge of the principles, methods, procedures, and applications of business valuation. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Accounting Education on students’ knowledge of business valuation in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Human Capital Theory, Experiential Learning Theory, and Constructivist Learning Theory. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in education and relevant knowledge develops students’ competencies and improves their future productivity and employability. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes the development of knowledge through practical experience, reflection, conceptualization, and application. Constructivist Learning Theory explains how students develop meaningful understanding by connecting new valuation concepts with existing accounting and financial knowledge through active learning and problem-solving. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Education may influence students’ knowledge of business valuation. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Accounting Education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to financial accounting, management accounting, financial management, investment appraisal, financial statement analysis, accounting theory, business finance, practical accounting exercises, case studies, valuation-related classroom instruction, lecturer demonstrations, problem-solving activities, project-based learning, accounting software applications, spreadsheet exercises, financial-data analysis, practical assignments, group activities, and assessment activities. Students’ knowledge of business valuation will be assessed using indicators such as understanding of business valuation concepts, purpose of business valuation, factors affecting business value, valuation principles, valuation terminology, valuation processes, financial statement analysis for valuation, historical financial performance analysis, revenue analysis, profit analysis, cash-flow analysis, asset analysis, liability analysis, capital structure analysis, financial-ratio analysis, profitability analysis, liquidity analysis, solvency analysis, efficiency analysis, market analysis, industry analysis, business risk assessment, financial risk assessment, growth assessment, competitive-position assessment, management assessment, intangible-asset recognition, goodwill recognition, brand-value consideration, customer-base consideration, intellectual-property consideration, valuation date, valuation assumptions, valuation information requirements, valuation procedures, valuation reports, and ethical considerations in business valuation. Knowledge of specific valuation approaches will include asset-based valuation, income-based valuation, market-based valuation, discounted cash-flow valuation, capitalization of earnings, capitalization of cash flows, net asset value, adjusted net asset value, liquidation value, replacement value, comparable-company analysis, precedent-transaction analysis, price-to-earnings ratio, price-to-sales ratio, price-to-book ratio, enterprise-value-to-earnings measures, enterprise-value-to-sales measures, dividend-based approaches where applicable, and other appropriate valuation techniques. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, business valuation knowledge tests, case-study questions, practical valuation exercises, financial-statement interpretation tasks, scenario-based assessments, and relevant academic records. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ characteristics, exposure to Accounting Education, learning experiences, and business valuation knowledge levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Accounting Education on students’ knowledge of business valuation. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students’ business valuation knowledge scores before and after exposure to selected Accounting Education activities may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional instruction to determine changes associated with the educational intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Education has a significant positive effect on students’ knowledge of business valuation in Nigerian polytechnics. Students who receive effective and comprehensive Accounting Education are expected to demonstrate greater understanding of business valuation concepts, purposes, principles, procedures, and applications. Instruction in financial accounting may improve students’ understanding of financial information required for valuation. Management accounting education may strengthen students’ understanding of costs, profitability, budgeting, and business performance. Financial management education may improve students’ understanding of investment decisions, financing decisions, risk, return, and business value. Investment-appraisal activities may strengthen students’ understanding of the relationship between expected future returns and business value. Financial statement analysis may improve students’ ability to examine revenue, profit, assets, liabilities, cash flows, and financial ratios when assessing business value. Practical valuation exercises may strengthen students’ ability to apply valuation techniques to realistic business situations. Case studies may improve students’ ability to interpret business information and make valuation-related judgments. Asset-based valuation exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of the relationship between business assets, liabilities, and net asset value. Income-based valuation activities may improve students’ understanding of the relationship between business earnings, cash flows, growth, and value. Market-based valuation exercises may strengthen students’ ability to use comparable businesses and market information in valuation. Discounted cash-flow exercises may improve students’ understanding of future cash flows, discounting, terminal value, and the time value of money. Capitalization-of-earnings activities may strengthen students’ understanding of the relationship between maintainable earnings and business value. Net asset-value exercises may improve students’ ability to determine business value from adjusted assets and liabilities. Comparable-company analysis may strengthen students’ understanding of market-based valuation. Precedent-transaction analysis may improve students’ awareness of transaction-based valuation evidence. Valuation-ratio exercises may strengthen students’ ability to interpret relevant market multiples. Business-risk assessment may improve students’ understanding of factors that may influence valuation outcomes. Growth-assessment activities may strengthen students’ ability to consider future business performance. Industry and market analysis may improve students’ understanding of external factors affecting business value. Management assessment may strengthen students’ awareness of the influence of managerial competence on business performance and valuation. Intangible-asset activities may improve students’ understanding of goodwill, brands, customer relationships, intellectual property, and other non-physical sources of business value. Valuation-assumption exercises may strengthen students’ ability to recognize the importance of appropriate assumptions and reliable financial information. Valuation-report activities may improve students’ understanding of how valuation findings are communicated. Ethical-valuation activities may strengthen students’ awareness of objectivity, professional judgment, confidentiality, independence, and responsible use of financial information. Lecturer demonstrations may provide clear explanations of valuation principles and procedures. Problem-solving activities may strengthen students’ ability to apply valuation concepts to financial data. Project-based learning may provide opportunities for students to conduct practical business valuation exercises. Spreadsheet activities may improve students’ ability to organize financial information and perform valuation calculations. Accounting-software activities may expose students to technology-supported financial analysis. Scenario-based exercises may strengthen students’ ability to apply valuation knowledge to different business situations. Repeated practice may improve students’ understanding, accuracy, confidence, and ability to interpret valuation information. However, the effectiveness of Accounting Education in developing business valuation knowledge may be constrained by inadequate practical accounting laboratories, limited access to realistic business valuation cases, insufficient exposure to financial-market information, inadequate accounting software and spreadsheet facilities, limited lecturer expertise in business valuation, outdated instructional materials, large class sizes, limited practical teaching periods, insufficient industry exposure, weak university-industry or polytechnic-industry collaboration, inadequate access to current financial data, and limited integration of business valuation into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects comprehensive, practical, technology-supported, industry-relevant, and adequately supervised Accounting Education to contribute significantly to improved knowledge of business valuation among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Accounting Education, business valuation knowledge, accounting education pedagogy, Human Capital Theory, Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, financial accounting education, management accounting education, financial management education, investment appraisal, financial statement analysis, business valuation, asset-based valuation, income-based valuation, market-based valuation, discounted cash-flow valuation, capitalization of earnings, net asset value, comparable-company analysis, precedent-transaction analysis, valuation multiples, business performance analysis, financial analysis, business risk, financial risk, growth analysis, intangible assets, goodwill, valuation assumptions, valuation reports, professional ethics, accounting software, spreadsheet applications, practical accounting education, workplace readiness, employability skills, Accounting Education students, Nigerian polytechnics, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnic administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, employers, financial analysts, business consultants, valuation professionals, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students’ understanding of business valuation. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating business valuation concepts and practical exercises into Accounting Education programmes, providing realistic valuation cases and financial data, strengthening students’ financial statement analysis and valuation skills, improving access to accounting software and spreadsheet tools, enhancing lecturers’ practical valuation competencies, increasing industry exposure, providing repeated valuation exercises and structured feedback, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with contemporary business valuation and financial decision-making requirements in Nigeria.
