Effect of Accounting Education on Students’ Knowledge of Crowdfunding as a Business Financing Option in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Accounting education plays an important role in equipping students with knowledge and skills for understanding financial decisions and emerging sources of business finance. Crowdfunding has become an increasingly relevant financing option that enables individuals and businesses to raise funds from a large number of contributors through digital platforms. However, students may have limited knowledge of how crowdfunding operates, its financing models, benefits, risks, and suitability for different business ventures. This study examines the effect of accounting education on students’ knowledge of crowdfunding as a business financing option in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is intended to determine whether exposure to accounting education improves students’ understanding of crowdfunding and its application in business financing decisions. Accounting education provides students with knowledge of financial management, sources of finance, investment decisions, business planning, and financial accountability. Through classroom instruction, practical exercises, case studies, and exposure to contemporary financial practices, students can develop an understanding of traditional and emerging financing alternatives. Crowdfunding education can introduce students to models such as donation-based, reward-based, lending-based, and equity-based crowdfunding, as well as the processes involved in accessing and evaluating crowdfunding platforms. Such knowledge can help students understand how businesses can mobilize financial resources beyond conventional sources such as bank loans and personal savings. Students’ knowledge of crowdfunding refers to their ability to understand its meaning, operating processes, financing models, benefits, limitations, risks, and relevance to business development. Adequate knowledge may enable students to distinguish crowdfunding from other financing methods and assess its suitability for different business needs. Accounting education can contribute to this knowledge by providing students with financial concepts that help them evaluate funding requirements, financial obligations, investor or contributor expectations, and the accountability associated with externally sourced funds. Therefore, effective accounting education may improve students’ capacity to understand crowdfunding as a viable business financing option. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample will be drawn using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to accounting education and their knowledge of crowdfunding as a business financing option. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the effect of accounting education on students’ knowledge of crowdfunding. The study is expected to establish that accounting education has a positive effect on students’ knowledge of crowdfunding as a business financing option. Students who receive adequate exposure to relevant accounting concepts and contemporary financing practices are expected to demonstrate better understanding of crowdfunding processes, models, benefits, risks, and applications. The study may also reveal that integrating emerging financing mechanisms into accounting education can improve students’ awareness of alternative sources of business capital and strengthen their ability to evaluate different financing choices. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education in polytechnics. Accounting lecturers may need to incorporate contemporary business financing practices into existing accounting courses through practical examples, case studies, classroom discussions, and digital learning activities. Greater attention to crowdfunding may help students connect theoretical accounting knowledge with current developments in business finance. It may also encourage students to develop financial evaluation skills that are relevant to entrepreneurship and the financing of small and emerging businesses. The study is expected to be significant to Accounting Education students, accounting lecturers, polytechnic management, curriculum developers, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders in business education. Students may benefit from improved knowledge of alternative financing opportunities, while lecturers may gain insight into areas that require greater emphasis in accounting instruction. Curriculum developers may use the findings to strengthen the inclusion of emerging financial technologies and alternative financing methods in accounting-related programmes. Entrepreneurs may also benefit indirectly from graduates who possess broader knowledge of modern approaches to business financing and financial evaluation. The study recommends that polytechnics should strengthen accounting education by incorporating relevant knowledge of crowdfunding and other emerging business financing options into appropriate accounting courses. Lecturers should employ practical and technology-supported teaching approaches to expose students to real-world crowdfunding processes, financing models, benefits, and risks. Students should also be encouraged to develop broader knowledge of digital financial platforms and alternative financing mechanisms. The study concludes that accounting education can play an important role in improving students’ understanding of crowdfunding and preparing them to recognize and evaluate emerging opportunities for business financing.
